About the Presentation
This paper discusses the various livelihood struggles and strategies that are used by the former-single sex (men) workers’ hostel dwellers, residing at KwaMashu hostel. KwaMashu hostel is now officially known as KwaMashu Community Residential Units (CRUs). Research was further collected in the four northern KwaZulu Natal rural areas, Empangeni, Eshowe, kwaHlabisa and kwaNongoma, which are highly interconnected with the former single sex hostel. KwaMashu CRUs primarily accommodates African men and women who continuously migrate from the northern KwaZulu Natal rural areas to KwaMashu CRUS to seek for better livelihood opportunities. This research was conducted between 2009 and 2012 as part of a PhD research. Ethnographic research methods and relational conceptions (rural-urban continuum) of space have been used as theoretical and research frames.
