DUT VICE-CHANCELLOR AND PRINCIPAL, PROFESSOR THANDWA MTHEMBU TO OFFICIALLY WELCOME FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Thandwa Mthembu, will officially welcome all first-year students, together with their parents, guardians and sponsors. The welcome ceremony for students in Durban will be held at the Curries Fountain Stadium on Monday, 13 February 2023 from 09h00 to 10h30. The first-year students in the Midlands will be officially welcomed at the Indumiso Sports Centre, Indumiso Campus in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday, 14 February 2023 from 09h00 to 10h30.

All guests are to be seated by 08h30 and both ceremonies will be broadcast live on the University’s website: www.dut.ac.za

The 2023 Vice-Chancellor’s Welcome Day ceremonies form part of the First-Year Orientation Week, which is organised by the Student Governance and Development team at DUT, to help bridge the gap between high school life and university life. In Durban, the Orientation programme will start on Monday, 13 February 2023 and end on Thursday, 16 February 2023 whilst in Midlands, Orientation will commence on Tuesday, 14 February 2023 and conclude on Friday, 17 February 2023.

Professor Mthembu is expected to congratulate the first-year students on successfully completing Grade 12 and for making the right choice in selecting DUT as their preferred institution of higher learning. He will share the DUT accomplishments and accolades, such as DUT being ranked as one of the Top 5 universities in South Africa by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Throughout the Orientation, students will get to understand the university’s current strategy, ENVISION2030 and its objectives. They will also get to understand the significance of the new DUT tagline: Creative. Distinctive. Impactful.

The Orientation programme is designed to introduce and orientate first-year students and their parents to the range of services, facilities and aspects of university life unique to DUT.

The programme is planned as follows:
Day 1: Parents’ Day and Vice-Chancellors welcome address.
Day 2: Campus Health, Safety and Crime Prevention.
Day 3: Engagement/Financial Aid/Scholarships/Entrepreneurship.
Day 4: Becoming a DUT Student.

The Orientation week will end on a high note with the First-Year Sports Day to be held at the Indumiso Campus Sports Centre on Saturday, 18 February 2023 from 08h00 to 13h30. The new students from the various campuses will be mixed to form teams that will compete in the knockout sessions. The teams will compete in the indoor courts, playing street soccer, volleyball, netball and basketball.
