Bongani Yengwa; Manager; Sports Administration Unit at DUT welcomed all the students who were in attendance . He also emphasised that students should come and join sports as there are different sports codes available at DUT.

“Go out there firstly to enjoy yourself and do your best, but if your best is winning, we’ll appreciate it,” he said.

Yengwa also highlighted the activities of the Sports Administration Unit at DUT, he revealed that DUT has a total of 22 sporting codes at the moment. According to Yengwa, the Sports Administration offices can be found in both the Midlands and Durban campuses. In the Midlands the office is situated in Indumiso Campus and in Durban it is based at the Fred Crookes Sports Centre, Steve Biko Campus.

He further added that as part of DUT ENVISION2030, the Sport Administration unit wants to create a compelling and future-oriented living and learning environment for students through sport.

Here are the Sport codes that students participated on the 2023 First-Year Sport Day Orientation:
· Basketball
· Netball
· Volleyball
· 5 aside soccer
· Aerobics
· Boxing and they also played Inflatable slides.

The DUT believes that the sports orientation is one of the most important programmes to start an academic year for the first-year students as they get to be introduced into the university community. It also serves as a platform for them to establish their social identity on campus.

During the 2023 First-Year Sports Orientation there were orientation helpers, organised by the Student Governance Unit, who were assisting first-year students while they were participating in different sports codes. They were also helping with accurate information as the institution is aiming to avoid first-year students receiving distorted information from individuals who are not officially recognised by the university.

Sanele Zwane, a Civil Engineering student shared his views on the 2023 First-Year Sports Orientation.

“I am very happy to be part of the DUT 2023 Sport Day Orientation because I gained lots of information when it comes to different sports codes offered by the university. Besides being introduced to different sport codes offered by the DUT, I also met and made lots of friends. I also got to mingle with my classmates,” said Zwane.
