Former Student Representative Council (SRC) Treasure 2013/2014. Senzekile Myeza graduated for her Advanced Diploma in Quality Management Systems at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) Autumn graduation that is being hosted at the Olive Convention Centre. This hard-earned qualification was conferred to Myeza on 26 May 2023 during the 14H00 session.
This is Myeza’s second time graduating from DUT as she had previously obtained her National Diploma in Biotechnology majoring in Microbiology and Biochemistry. For Myeza, the journey was bitter-sweet, and she is grateful to her late partner whom she said was her biggest supporter and cheerleader.
“The last time I attended school was in 2015 and now I am working. I had to balance school and work. That was challenging for me because I had to take care of my family and fully commit to them,” said Myeza.
Myeza shared that in 2019, she fell sick and was then diagnosed with a chronic sickness that led her to having health difficulties where she had to do operations in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022. She added that she was operated twice 2022- that being in May 2022 and in November 2022. Sadly, she had to ask for hospital pass out so that she could write her exams.
“I would like to give credit to my late husband who passed on 12 April 2023; for supporting me throughout my academic journey and throughout my health difficulties. I am grateful for and to him. He would do house chores when I could not, he would also stay up with me while I was taking afternoon classes. When I was preparing for exams, he would print notes and send them to me while I was in hospital. He was basically my pillar through my academic year period,” said Myeza.
She further praised her late husband, her lecturers, and her group mates for motivating her to not lose hope as the journey got steeper; saying that they assisted her while she was in hospital. At one point, she wished to give up but her late partner encouraged her to hold on and reminded her of the bigger picture.
Myeza advised those students with interest of joining students’ politics to focus, know their priorities and to remember the reason they came to the university. In addition, one should not allow themselves to be swallowed by politics as students’ politics can be so addictive.
