A dedicated former Durban University of Technology (DUT) Student Representative Council (SRC) Education and Transformation Officer, Lindokuhle Bandile Sibisi (21) from Sweetwaters KwaNxamalala, Pietermaritzburg obtained his Advanced Diploma in Accounting at the DUT Autumn Graduation held at Olive Convention Centre (OCC) on Friday morning (26 May 2023)
Sibisi’s journey at DUT began in 2019 when he got enrolled for his Diploma in Accounting. Like any other students, he came across lots of challenges along his academic journey but God gave him courage to never give up. He is grateful for all the challenges he came across along his academic journey because he believes that they moulded him to become a leader and grow as an individual. He even found himself serving as the SRC Education and Transformation Officer at Midlands campuses, his duties included making that sure all students were able to register since it was the COVID -19 era.
When he told his parents that he was graduating for his Advanced Diploma in Accounting they were very excited and could not even wait for this big day.
Speaking about his challenges, Sibisi said, “During my undergraduate studies, I came across challenges but they were nothing compared to the challenges that I came across during my postgraduate qualification. My registration process was full of uncertainty due to financial difficulties. There were times where I wanted to give up but I decided to keep the eye on the ball.”
We all know that graduation season is a period of happiness and celebrations but for Sibisi, this was a very emotional day for him as he lost his dad few months ago. His father who has been his pillar, supporter and his cheerleader throughout his academic journey. He mentioned that this degree is solely dedicated to him as he was ready to attend his graduation. “All the preparations were made but God had other plans, but I know he is right here spiritually celebrating this big day with me,” he shed tears.
Furthermore, he mentioned that losing his dad opened his eyes as he is the first born, the pressure of having to take care of his siblings is all over his shoulders. He also wants to set a good example to his siblings and instil the power of education in their minds. After losing his father, he had to man up, make good decisions because he know he has to take over from him.
“I am excited for what’s coming my way, as I work towards my goal of becoming a certified Chartered Accountant (CA). The journey has not been easy but with faith and determination, I know that I can achieve my dreams. Above all I will be so happy to give my family a better life,” he said.
Despite all the ups and downs Sibisi celebrated his qualification as he believes it will pave a way to becoming a Chartered Accountant. He also wants to further his studies and obtain a Master’s degree in Commerce right after completing his postgraduate diploma but his plan is to obtain his PhD before the age of 25. Currently, he is enrolled for his Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting.
Through it all, he attributes all his success to his late father, mother, family and friends whose unwavering support and sacrifices made it possible. Sibisi believes that becoming a certified Chartered Accountant will open doors for him. “Being a certified Chartered Accountant will enable me to use my knowledge to help build a better country and help the company I work for become more successful,” said Sibisi.
He advised first years who are doing Accounting to stay positive, set high personal and academic standards for themselves and live up to them.
