DUT SCIENTISTS CONDUCT INDEPENDENT SAFETY TESTS ON DURBAN’S DRINKING WATER

Scientists and researchers from the Institute for Water and Wastewater Technology (IWWT) at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) have sampled and tested water from multiple areas within the eThekwini Municipality. The water samples were collected on 31 May 2023 and 01 June 2023 and the areas covered the Northern, Southern and Western parts of Durban.

Director of the Institute for Water and Wastewater Technology at DUT, Professor Faizal Bux said that “the water tests were conducted in accordance with the standard protocol for microbiological water quality analysis, as per SANS 241. Samples obtained included tap water from households, water supplied by tankers and stand pipes from informal settlements. The areas tested had a consistent supply of water during the sampling period.”

The results of the water analysis conducted by the Institute for Water and Wastewater Technology at DUT indicated that no E.coli was present in any of the water samples tested. Professor Bux elaborated that the “findings showed that the water satisfies microbiological water quality standards at the time of sampling.”

The Institute for Water and Wastewater Technology at DUT has reiterated that these findings were in the interest of public safety and confirmed that the water analysis and sampling was not commissioned by any individual, organisation or entity, be it private, public or governmental.
