DUT E-SPORT CLINCHES THIRD PLACE IN THE 2023 USSA TOURNAMENT

It was a victorious moment for the Durban University of Technology (DUT) E-Sport team as they took third place in the 2023 USSA E-Sport tournament.

The 2023 USSA E-Sport tournament was held at Sol Plaatje University from 1 September 2023 to 3 September 2023 at the Sol Plaatje Sports Centre Hall.

The University of the Witwatersrand, University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch University and Tshwane University of Technology were among the participating universities who were eager to compete.

Representing DUT were the following E-Sport players: Thamsanqa Myeni, Nobuhle Ndlovu, Nokwanda Buthelezi, Mava Ntombela, Mfundo Khumalo and Khanya Ngcobo.

“I feel very much honoured to be part of the  2023 USSA E-Sport tournament. Competing in the tournament was both thrilling and nerve-wracking. Facing off against some of the best female players was a true test of skill and strategy. Each match was a rollercoaster of emotions, with intense moments of triumph and, yes, some tough losses,” said E-Sport player, Nokwanda Buthelezi.

She further shared that being part of the team was an incredible experience. She explained that her team trained tirelessly developing strategies. “We had each other’s backs, offering support during both victories and defeats. It was more than just a team it was a group of friends united by a shared passion. All thanks goes to our coach for being so patient with us as we learnt and grew. We thank him for the countless hours he invests in helping us to improve,” she said.

DUT’s overall performance at the 2023 USSA E-Sport tournament saw the male team advance through two group stages, reaching the round 32 in the knockout and making it to the quarterfinals. The female team achieved fourth place finish in one category and secured second place.

“I took it upon myself to look for female students who were interested in learning and being part of the team. Also, they have successfully completed a training course I put together for the past four months, and it worked well,” said Ntokozo Radebe: DUT E-Sport coach.

He further explained that one of his roles as a coach is to ensure that E-Sport does not only grow within DUT campuses but grows provincially. “We have been working with a number of primary school programmes as well as high school programmes to educate the youth about E-sports and where DUT is headed in the near future,” he commented.

He also urged students to join DUT E-Sport and showcase their skills and talent.

E-Sport player, Buthelezi said that the E-sport tournament was an unforgettable journey filled with adrenaline, camaraderie, and a deep sense of purpose. “It’s an experience I will always cherish. As a team we will continue practicing and learning so that the next time we don’t repeat the same mistakes that we had made,” she professed.
