On Friday, 06 October 2023, the Department of Financial Accounting under the Faculty of Accounting and Informatics at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) hosted an exhilarating Sports Day at the Steve Biko Campus Sport Centre.
The event was a resounding success, bringing together students and staff members for a day filled with camaraderie and competition. This annual tradition is not only an opportunity for participants to showcase their athletic prowess but also to foster a sense of unity and teamwork among the Department’s community.
The Department of Financial Accounting Sports Day was more than just a day of games; it was a celebration of unity, teamwork, and the vibrant spirit that thrives within the DUT community. The event showcased the importance of fostering strong bonds among students and faculty members while also promoting physical fitness and a healthy competitive spirit.
The sports day began with a burst of energy as Ms Nqobile Buthelezi led participants in invigorating aerobics exercises. The rhythmic movements and lively atmosphere set the stage for an unforgettable day of fun and competition.
Students were divided into four spirited teams: Blue, Light Blue, Grey, and Purple. Each team brought their unique flair to the games, creating a vibrant atmosphere that resonated throughout the event. The friendly rivalry among the teams only served to strengthen the sense of unity and belonging.
The sports day featured a diverse range of activities that tested both physical prowess and teamwork. Participants engaged in classic games such as the egg and spoon race, sack race, tug of war, and the three-legged race. These activities not only provided moments of laughter and excitement but also promoted collaboration and mutual support among participants.
One of the day’s highlights was the indoor soccer match between students and staff. The students showed their mettle as they triumphed over the staff scoring 1-0, showcasing their skills and dedication. On the other hand, the staff members demonstrated their prowess in an intense indoor volleyball match, securing a victory of 3-1.
As the day concluded, Dr Ferina Marimuthu, the Head of the Department (HOD) of Financial Accounting, expressed her gratitude to the event organisers, Sports Administration staff, and all participants. She emphasized that this year’s sports day had surpassed the previous one in terms of enthusiasm and participation. Dr Marimuthu also highlighted the significance of the event, noting that it’s not just about winning but the spirit of togetherness and the collaboration that it fosters. “The focus isn’t solely on winning; it’s about nurturing team camaraderie,” said Dr Marimuthu.
As the sun set on a day filled with laughter and sportsmanship, participants left with lasting memories and a renewed sense of belonging to the DUT family. “The 2023 sports day was a tremendous success, showing how well we can work as a team.
