The Durban University of Technology is hosting a Crime Awareness Week which will take place on the Ritson campus Durban and the Indumiso campus in the Midlands, from Monday, 23 October to Friday, 27 October 2023. The Crime Awareness Week is being hosted by DUT Protection Services.
The DUT SAFE-U Crime Awareness Week initiative can play a significant role in advancing the goals and objectives outlines in the ENVISION2030 strategy. By promoting safety, engagement, well-being, and community collaboration, it contributes to creating a more secure and supportive environment that aligns with the university’ long term vision and objectives.
The much-anticipated event is planned to raise awareness about crime prevention and safety measures within the DUT community. This event will serve as an excellent opportunity to foster collaboration between the DUT institution and law enforcement agencies like the South African Police Service, to work together to inform, educate and empower the DUT community and broader public about safety and security.
Giving more context to the event is Mr Relibile Mofokeng, Director: Protection Services. He said that hosting such an event is vital to foster a safer and more secure campus environment. “By raising awareness about crime prevention, students can become more informed about potential risks and learn how to protect themselves and their peers. Additionally, promoting crime awareness can encourage a sense of community and collaboration among students, faculty, and staff, leading to a collective effort in maintaining a safe campus environment,” he stressed.
The Crime Awareness Week will consist of various activities, including seminars, workshops, and demonstrations such as live self-defence demonstrations, all aimed at educating the DUT community about crime prevention, personal safety, and the role of law enforcement.
“The active involvement of the DUT community in the DUT SAFE-U Crime Awareness Week initiative is essential for fostering a safe, informed, and cohesive environment, where members take an active role in preventing crime and supporting each other-remember that safety is a shared responsibility (#ASafeDUTStartsWithMe). This initiative contributes to the overall well-being of the university environment,,” said Mr Mofokeng.
