STUDENT GOVERNANCE AND DEVELOPMENT HOSTED THE VICE-CHANCELLORS AND PRINCIPAL’S ENGAGEMENT WITH STUDENT LEADERS

The Student Governance and Development unit at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) hosted the Vice-Chancellor and Principal’s Engagement with student leaders. This important event was held at the Hilton Garden Inn on Tuesday, 28 November 2023.

 The aim of the engagement was for the DUT management and student leaders to converse and engage on how the university can bridge the divide between students and the institution.

 Ms Fathima Haffajee who is the Director of Student Services was the programme director for the day. Ms Haffajee identified the Vice Chancellor’s’s engagement with the Student Representative Council (SRC) as a high impact encounter on the Pathway of Student Lived Experience. She believes that this encounter can enhance collaboration, upscale engagement and impact positively on student success within the university.

The Dean of Students, Dr Clement Moreku delivered the opening and welcoming remarks. Dr Moreku said that executive management through Student Services has created different platforms for constructive engagements. He mentioned the Lekgotla series, Students Led Conversations and other forums created on a weekly basis to give students holistic levels and as well to address issues of public interest.

Dr Moreku further said that the engagement aimed at creating a common purpose and understanding but also to foster the meeting of minds on shared values and to align the initiatives with the university’s 12 strategic objectives of ENVISION2030.

Addressing the student leaders, Dr Maditsane Nkonoane who is the institutional registrar thanked the SRC for contributing to saving the examinations, through the statements that were issued by the SRC.

Mr Masiza Ngculu, Student Governance and Development Manager, led the conversations and insights from the management and student leaders. The conversations were about how the university management, and the student leaders can work together to tackle issues faced by the students on the daily basis.

Student Governance Officer, Ms Thokozani Sibiya delivered the closing remarks. She thanked everyone for their engagement and for their attendance.
