DUT IMPACT 

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) approved the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework. The five values are identified as transparency, honesty, integrity, respect, and accountability. The principles espoused are fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion, and excellence. DUT’s Communications team, Waheeda Peters, spoke to Kimera Naicker who is an Administrator at the DUT-IREC office.

Q: Kindly tell me about your role at DUT?

A: “I am an Administrator at DUT-IREC office. I am responsible for overseeing and managing the ethical review process for undergraduate research conducted at the DUT. My role involves ensuring that research projects adhere to ethical standards and guidelines, protecting the rights and well-being of research participants.”

Q: How long have you been a member of the DUT family? 

 A: “I have been at DUT for five years.”

Q: Amongst the mentioned ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles, which one do you mostly associate with and why? 

 A: “I resonate most with respect because respect is a fundamental element in fostering diversity and inclusion. When people respect each other, regardless of differences in background, culture, or perspective, it creates an environment where everyone feels valued and included.”

Q: What are your views on the new DUT tagline: Creative. Distinctive. Impactful?

 A: “It reflects the university’s commitment to fostering innovation, uniqueness, and meaningful contributions to society. It sets a positive and forward-looking tone for our institution.”

Q: How are you planning to keep abreast with the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework? 

 A: “I plan to stay informed about the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework through regular engagement with university communications, attending relevant workshops, and participating in ongoing professional development opportunities.”

Q: What is the one thing that most people do not know about you? 

 A: “One thing that most people may not know about me is that I love being organised.”

Q: In your opinion, how will the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework benefit DUT? 

 A: “It offers clear guiding principles. It enhances the university’s culture, promotes a shared sense of purpose, and contributes to the overall success and reputation of the university.”

Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?

 A: “I enjoy watching television and reading in my spare time.”

Q: How do you plan to make a positive impact at DUT? 

 A: “By ensuring that undergraduate research adheres to ethical standards, thereby enhancing the university’s reputation for responsible and impactful research.”

Q: What is your daily motivation? 

 A: “My family is my motivation. Being able to provide them with a steady financial support is my biggest motivation.”

Q: What are your future goals at DUT? 

 A: “In the future, I aspire to obtain a Master’s degree and securing a permanent job.”

Q: If you were granted one wish, what would it be?

 A: “I would wish for a world free of conflict.”
