The DUT Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Thandwa Mthembu will be addressing all first-year students, together with their parents, guardians and sponsors, at the opening of the ADAPT@DUT First Year Orientation Week, to be held from Tuesday, 06 February 2024 to Sunday, 11 February 2024. Prof Mthembu will officially welcome the first-year DUT students based on the Durban campuses at the Curries Fountain Stadium on Tuesday, 06 February 2024 from 08h30. The welcome ceremony for students in the Midlands will be held on the Indumiso Campus in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday, 12 February 2024 from 08h30.
The First-Year Orientation Week forms part of Sikusekele, a holistic student support initiative led by the DUT Dean of Students, Dr Clement Moreku, who constituted a planning team from the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, Student Governance and Development, Student Housing and Residence-Life, Time Tables, and other units within student services. The theme ADAPT@DUT stands for Academic support, Diversity and Inclusion, Agility and Atttunement, Participation and Transition.
The DUT Orientation Week is designed to foster a smooth transition and integration into campus life and to promote student success and retention, by placing students at the centre of the main and co-curricular activities, as co-creators of their own experience. It aims to bridge the gap between high school life and university life.
Prof Mthembu is expected to extend a warm welcome to the first-year students as they join the DUT community. He will congratulate the students on successfully completing Grade 12 and for making the right choice in selecting DUT as their preferred institution of higher learning. Prof Mthembu will highlight the DUT accomplishments and accolades for 2023, while giving insight on the university’s ENVISION2030 strategy and its objectives.
The Orientation Week will end on a high note with an Oath taking ceremony, inclusive of; Commitment to academic excellence; Commitment to the DUT Lived Values; Commitment to Entrepreneurship and Innovation; and Commitment to active participation in the co-curriculum.
