GUMEDE BAGS CUM LAUDE AND A DEAN’S MERIT AWARD FOR HER ADVANCED DIPLOMA IN LIBRARY AND INFORMATION STUDIES

Nombuso Gumede, a Library and Information Studies student at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) will be graduating Cum Laude and will obtain the prestigious Dean’s Merit Award for academic excellence at the Olive Convention Centre on Wednesday, 22 May 2024. This is after the young lady from Luganda in Marianhill excelled in her academics for her Advanced Diploma in the Library and Information Studies.

Gumede’s passion for Library and Information Studies is rooted in sharing information and communicating with people. This is her second qualification as she also graduated Cum Laude for her three-year diploma.

She explained that through hard work, passion and determination, she was able to achieve this esteemed award.

“I am proud to have achieved Cum Laude and the Dean’s Merit award. This exceeded my expectations. When I first checked my results on the portal, seeing ‘Pass’ brought me joy. A few days later, while browsing the portal with my family to determine the number of guests allowed for the graduation ceremony, I noticed something extraordinary. The qualification results had changed to Cum Laude and the Dean’s Merit Award, I read it three times to ensure I was not mistaken. Overwhelmed with a mix of emotions and disbelief, I burst into tears,” she said.

She credited her achievement to her dedication and the unwavering support of her family and friends. “Achieving Cum Laude for both my qualifications has been a blessing, and receiving the Dean’s Merit is indescribable, I am grateful beyond words,” she added.

Speaking on some of the challenges she had faced as a student, she mentioned that she had many things to juggle at once.

“Balancing work, motherhood and studies was challenging. I did not attend classes hence I was working, and could only come to campus for tests, exams, or for presentations. I had sleepless nights studying, mainly during weekends, to manage my academic workload,” shared Gumede.

However, despite these challenges, she relied on provided notes and she had to conduct research and compile her own notes to keep up with the coursework.
Looking ahead, she plans to pursue a Postgraduate Diploma and aims to continue her growth in the field of Library and Information Studies.

Gumede is currently employed as a librarian at a private college, contributing to providing valuable services to the academic institution, further enriching her experience and passion for knowledge sharing.

She hopes her story inspires others to pursue their dreams relentlessly and embrace opportunities for growth and learning.

“I encourage you to remain open-minded, embrace challenges, and seek guidance from mentors. Remember, perseverance and a positive mindset are key to overcoming obstacles and achieving success,” concluded Gumede.
