EMPOWERING THE DUT COMMUNITY: PROTECTION SERVICES UNIT HOST SELF-DEFENSE WORKSHOP AND FITNESS & WELLNESS DAY

The Protection Services unit at the Durban University of Technology recently hosted two impactful events aimed at promoting a safer and healthier community environment. The first event was a Self-Defense Workshop which was held at the Fred Crookes Sport Centre, Steve Biko campus, on Tuesday, 07 May 2024. A Fitness and Wellness Day was held at the same venue on Wednesday, 08 May 2024.

The Self-Defense Workshop was designed to empower individuals with essential skills and knowledge to protect themselves in various situations. It was conducted by Professor David Verster from Lions Den in the Carlson Gracie Jui Jitsu Centre (Berea West, Westville). The self-defense techniques demonstrated by Prof Verster were: Rear Naked Choke and Defense with throw, Guillotine Choke, Knife Defense Overhand, Underhand, Side and Rear, Triangle Punch Block and Rape Defense with shirt Choke from standing. Prof Verster equipped the DUT staff and students in attendance with skills on how they can defend themselves in various situations.

The second event, a Fitness & Wellness Day, focused on promoting physical and mental well-being among the DUT community. It featured a range of activities such as group fitness classes, aerobics, indoor football games and mindfulness sessions. Participants had the opportunity to engage in exercise, relaxation, and education, all contributing to a holistic approach to wellness. The lead instructors for this session were from Virgin Active Gym (The Atrium), an aerobics session conducted by Nhezzy Ndwendwana (Fitness Manager) assistance by sales team Nkululeko Zwane, Anathi Teyise and Zoey Khumalo.
Addressing the attendees, the Director: Protection Services, Mr Relibile Mofokeng said as Protection Services they are entrusted with safeguarding the well-being of every member of the DUT family.

“This responsibility extends beyond the physical security of our buildings and grounds. It encompasses nurturing an environment where every individual feels empowered to prioritise their health and safety. Vigilance isn’t just about being watchful; it’s about proactively cultivating an ethos of awareness and care. It’s about recognising that our collective well-being depends on each person playing an active role in promoting safety and wellness,” said Mr Mofokeng.
In addition, Mr Mofokeng indicated that encouraging a culture of vigilance meant embracing a holistic approach to wellness. He stated that the DUT community should also prioritise mental and emotional health, as they are equally essential components of a thriving community.

“Providing resources and support for stress management, resilience-building, and mental health awareness is crucial in this endeavour. Ultimately, promoting a culture of vigilance is about recognising that safety and wellness are not static goals but ongoing processes. It requires commitment, collaboration, and continuous improvement. As members of the Protection Services Unit, it’s our privilege to lead by example and inspire others to join us in this vital mission,” added Mr Mofokeng.

Both events were well-attended and received positive feedback from participants. By addressing both physical safety and wellness, the Protection Services Unit demonstrated a commitment to supporting the overall health and security of the DUT community. These events not only provided valuable skills and resources but also promoted a CULTURE OF SAFETY and empowerment among attendees.
