“Completing my Bachelor’s degree in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in record time while simultaneously pursuing my entrepreneurial endeavours filled me with immense joy. Despite facing countless obstacles, particularly last year, I persevered, staying true to a promise I made to myself at the onset of the year. The sense of accomplishment is beyond words,” said an elated alumna, Zime Nosipho Nxumalo.
The dynamic 21-year-old Nxumalo, who hails from the vibrant city of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, graduated Cum Laude, a testament to her dedication to mastering the realms of Information and Communication Technology, at the Olive Convention Centre on Thursday, 23 May 2024.
“The elation that swept through my family upon learning of my Cum Laude achievement surpassed even my own expectations, reaffirming the significance of perseverance and dedication,” she replied euphorically.
For Nxumalo, opting for a Bachelor’s in ICT was a deliberate choice, offering a blend of technical software development and crucial business modules like entrepreneurial spirit, directly enriching her entrepreneurial pursuits.
Besides being an astute graduate, Nxumalo is passionately pursuing her entrepreneurial journey called Zime Wezwe Creatives, a start-up revolutionising the home buying and selling process through innovative technologies such as Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
“Our aim is to streamline transactions, cutting costs and time by up to 10%,” she explained.
However, she did stress that in the first semester, the weight of deadlines and workload tempted her to consider dropping out. Yet, amidst managing business travels, team establishment for her start-up, capital raising, and dual university enrolments, she remained steadfast.
“My efforts bore fruit as I had emerged in the top 10% at the University of Cyprus, earning a coveted 25% scholarship for their Master’s of Science programme in Blockchain and Digital Finance-an essential step towards honing my skills for my start-up’s core, blockchain development,” she indicated.
While further academic pursuits beckon, she prioritises gaining industry experience to deepen her comprehension of academia’s practical applications.
“While accolades like the Mail and Guardian Top 200 and the Founder and Techpreneur of the Year 2024 awards are gratifying, the true reward lies in the joy I brought to my parents through my achievements,” she said.
Her aspirations revolve around continual growth-both in technical prowess and business acumen. “Mentorship, active participation in industry shifts, and empowering the next generation form the cornerstone of my journey,” she added.
Drawing from her experiences, she urges others to embrace the wisdom garnered from mistakes, while trusting in their own journey. “Remember, everyone is navigating their path, regardless of appearances,” said Nxumalo.
She is currently serving as the Johannesburg Sub-Chapter Head for Women in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Web3 Africa, and is committed to breaking down barriers for aspiring women in the Web3 space. “Offering access to vital resources like international funding opportunities, mentorship, and networks, I aim to pave a smoother path for those following in my footsteps. If you are interested in joining the Web3 movement. Reach out-I’m here to help,” she said.
