Luyanda Xhakaza (21) from a rural area called Swart-Mfolozi, graduated Cum Laude for her Degree of Bachelor of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) Autumn Graduation which was held at the Olive Convention Centre on Thursday, 23 May 2024.
The young academic shared that this achievement signified not only mastery of the subject matter but also a commitment to going above and beyond expectations. She believed that her getting Cum Laude will open various opportunities in further academic pursuits, career advancement, or recognition within the academic community.
“Graduating Cum Laude is a remarkable achievement and a testament to dedication, hard work, and academic excellence,” shared Xhakaza.
She faced many challenges as a student which included balancing coursework, assignments, exams, and netball training while aiming for academic excellence. However, through dedication, determination and hard work she persevered.
“The distance from home and the unfamiliarity of my surroundings often sparked feelings of homesickness, especially during the most stressful academic periods. Transitioning from a rural area to the lively university environment of Durban brought its own set of challenges, from adapting to a new city to forging new friendships and understanding the intricacies of campus life,” she said.
Xhakaza directed her gratitude towards her family for the unwavering support and motivation which had been instrumental in her success. She is currently enrolled for her Honour’s Degree in Bachelor of ICT and aims to pursue a career path that allows her to contribute meaningfully to the development of innovative technologies, while providing solutions that address real-world challenges.
“I encourage first-year students to stay curious about developing technologies, acquire a solid basis of core knowledge, and explore a variety of interests within the field. Seek practical experience through projects to supplement theoretical learning and prioritize equal emphasis on developing soft skills as well as technical expertise. network with industry professionals in the field and maintain your composure when faced with difficulties,” advised Xhakaza.
