The Durban University of Technology (DUT), Faculty of Accounting and Informatics, Department of Auditing and Taxation, Malika Hurbans (22) stands out amongst her peers in the Auditing and Taxation department. Her dedication has propelled her to become one of the leading academic performers in the Advanced Diploma programme for internal auditing.
Hurbans was honoured and grateful for her achievement on her graduation day on 23 May 2024 at the Olive Convention Centre, Durban. Surrounded by her peers, faculty staff members, and loved ones who had supported her throughout her academic journey, she was grateful to have had the opportunity to utilise her knowledge and skills in a professional capacity, aimed at making a meaningful contribution in her chosen field.
Hurbans was awarded her Advanced Diploma in Internal Auditing achieving the honour of Cum Laude for the second time.
For Hurbans, the journey was not without challenges, she had expressed that she had challenges with having to balance her workload with extracurricular activities and her personal commitments.
Despite facing challenges, Hurbans credited her determination, the support of the faculty office, and the encouragement from both her family and faith for helping her overcome her obstacles. She remained steadfast during difficult times, motivated by her desire to make her family proud and achieve success. Upon hearing about her academic accomplishments, her family expressed immense joy and pride.
As a top student achiever, Hurbans shared her advice to first-year students aiming to pursue a career in Internal Auditing. She emphasised the importance of staying focused and disciplined while making the most of the available resources such as networking opportunities, internships, and career workshops offered by the departments. She also encouraged first-year students to seek guidance from experienced professionals and to maintain a commitment to continuous learning and skills development.
“Take advantage of all the resources available, including networking opportunities, internships, and career workshops. Seek guidance from experienced professionals in the field and never stop learning and improving your skills,” she said.
Hurbans is currently registered for her Postgraduate Diploma in Internal Auditing, and she is eager to deepen her expertise in the course and advance her career prospects. She believes that continuous learning is an essential part in staying updated with industry trends and best practices and she is committed to investing in her professional development.
