As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates that will participate productively in the development of our region, country and the world. Mnqobi Ngobese, DUT Communication’s editorial team member, recently engaged with the DUT Football Club centre back Sifundo Ngema, to share his student experience through sports and academics and how he lives the DUT Living Values.

Q: When did you join the DUT Sport Team?
A: “I joined the DUT sport team in 2021.”
Q: What sparked your interest in this type of sport?
A: “I grew up playing football and I knew this was the sport that I wanted to play.”
Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what it entails and how it benefits the team?
A: “I play defensively, helping the team from conceding goals and guiding the opponents from being offensive against the team.”
Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?
A “I also play volleyball as it was one of the sport codes I was exposed to when I growing up.”
Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?
A: “I participated in the University Sport South Africa (USSA).”
Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sports?
A: “ To keep students fit and healthy and to also to prevent them from substance abuse.”
Q: Who is your sport role model and why?
A: “My sport role model is Sergio Ramos, he makes football look easy with the way he plays and also the way he defends on the field.”
Q: Which ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles do you associate with and why?
A: “I associate with accountability and respect. Where I come from respect goes a long way and taking responsibility for my actions is a sign of accountability.”
Q: Do you see a future in football?
A: Yes, I do see a future in this sport field.”
Q: As a DUT sport star, how does your role benefit your community?
A: “Back home, I often encourage the young generation that comes after me that sport and education can open many doors for you in future.”
Q: What impact has sport made on your life?
A: “Through football I have met brothers and even father figures (coaches) and it has contained me to be who I am today.”
Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sport?
A: “Playing good quality football, automatically will attract the attention of more spectators and also show people what we do in our training sessions, matches and off the field programmes through social media.”
