As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates that will participate productively in the development of our region, country and the world. Mnqobi Ngobese, DUT Communication’s editorial team member, recently engaged with the DUT Aerobics team’s captain Nqobile Buthelezi, to share her student experience through sports and academics and how she lives the DUT Living Values.

Q: When did you join the DUT Sport Team?
A: “I joined in 2022.”
Q: What sparked your interest in this type of sport?
A: “My love for sport and fitness, I simply enjoy the thrill of playing and being active.”
Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what it entails and how it benefits the team?
A: “Being a team captain, entails a combination of on-field performance, strategic thinking, and interpersonal skills. It benefits the team, as I motivate, guide and become the communication channel which essential for the team success.”
Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?
A “Netball , it demands cardiovascular fitness, strength and endurance and as sporty person I will enjoy that very much.”
Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?
A: “It was the University Sport South Africa (USSA) tournament. ”
Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sports?
A: “Sports teaches valuable skills like teamwork, discipline, communication and time management which are essential for success in all areas of life. So, for DUT to develop students in sports, it will produce well-rounded, skilled and empowered individuals who will excel in all aspects of life.”
Q: Who is your sport role model and why?
A: “Zamambo Mkhize, she’s one of best female instructor in aerobics and she is humble. She’s able to connect with her participants which makes it easy and to follow her instructions. She’s a true inspiration.”
Q: Which ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles do you associate with and why?
A: “Respect, honesty and fairness. I really believe in respect and I think everyone deserves to be treated with respect. With fairness you cannot be honest with the person you don’t respect.”
Q: Do you see a future in aerobics?
A: “Yes, aerobics is constantly evolving, with new forms and styles emerging, ensuring it remains fresh and exciting.”
Q: As a DUT sport star, how does your role benefit your community?
A: “By encouraging people to engage in physical activity, promoting health and wellness.”
Q: What impact has sport made on your life?
A: “Sport has helped me improve my self-esteem and I have gained confidence. Sport helps me to cope with stress and anxiety.”
Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sport?
A: “Enhancing game-day experience by improving concessions, seatings and amenities to make attending games more enjoyable.”
