Durban University of Technology (DUT) officially launched the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework, comprising five core values: transparency, honesty, integrity, respect, and accountability. These values are underpinned by the principles of fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion, and excellence. DUT’s Snethemba Shozi, a Marketing PR and Events Assistant at Human Capital Services, recently engaged in a conversation with Nompumelelo Ngcobo,  President of the University of Life Changers under Student Governance, at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), to delve deeper into the Living Values Framework and ENVISION2030

 Q: Kindly tell me about your role at DUT?

A: “At DUT, I hold a multitude of roles that drive personal growth, innovation, and community development. My foremost role is being a dedicated student at DUT, which provides the foundation for all my endeavours. Beyond my academic commitments, I proudly serve as the President of the University of Life Changers under Student Governance, where I lead initiatives that inspire and empower fellow students.

I also play a significant role in organising the Mr and Ms DUT Diversity programme, a vibrant celebration of inclusivity and diversity that brings our campus community together.”

Q: How long have you been a member of the DUT family?

A: “I have been a proud member of the DUT family since 2020, a journey marked by growth, learning, and impactful experiences.”

Q: Amongst the mentioned ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles, which one do you mostly associate with and why?

A; “The ENVISION2030 Living Value that resonates most deeply with me is respect. In every endeavour, I strive to embody respect and ubuntu, ensuring that every interaction is marked by these principles. Respect is the cornerstone of building strong, positive relationships, and fostering a supportive community. The principle of commitment also defines me, as I consistently dedicate myself fully to every task and responsibility I undertake. My unwavering commitment drives me to achieve excellence in all my pursuits and contribute meaningfully to the DUT community.”

Q: What are your views on the new DUT tagline: Creative, Distinctive, and Impactful?

A: “The new tagline, Creative, Distinctive, Impactful’ perfectly encapsulates my DUT journey. My roles in student leadership, community engagement, and entrepreneurship have shown me how DUT fosters creativity, particularly through initiatives like the innobiz incubation programme, which supports our start-up, Oluhlaza Energy. DUT’s commitment to nurturing innovative thinking and providing platforms for creative expression has been a cornerstone of my experience. This tagline isn’t just a slogan-it’s the lived reality of students like me who are constantly encouraged to be creative, stand out, and make a meaningful impact.”

Q: How are you planning to keep abreast with the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework?

A: “As a student leader deeply involved in DUT initiatives, I intend to align my activities with the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework. In my roles as President of the University of Life Changers and a member of the Student Parliament, I advocate for policies and programmes that embody these values. I will work tirelessly to ensure that our initiatives reflect the principles of innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability, creating a positive and forward-thinking campus environment.”

Q: What is the one thing that most people do not know about you?

A: “Many might be surprised to learn that I am the president of an international organisation called African Women in Leadership (AWLO). This role allows me to connect with and empower women across the continent, fostering leadership, innovation, and social impact on a broader scale.”

Q: In your opinion, how will the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework benefit DUT?

A: “The ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework will significantly benefit DUT by formalising and expanding the values and initiatives that have already made my experience here so enriching. Its focus on innovation and entrepreneurship aligns perfectly with my involvement in the innobiz incubation programme and Oluhlaza Energy. The framework’s emphasis on producing adaptive graduates and fostering a distinctive education reflects the growth I’ve experienced through programs like Vuna leadership and various clubs and societies. Events like Mr. and Ms. DUT Diversity showcase DUT’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity, enhancing campus culture and creating a welcoming environment for all. This framework will elevate these efforts, ensuring that DUT continues to produce graduates who are well-prepared to make meaningful contributions to society and adapt to future challenges.”

Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?

A: “In my spare time, I love immersing myself in the soulful rhythms of African music. Artists like Bongeziwe Mabandla, Jabulile Majola, Zoe Modiga, and Brenda Mtambo provide a soundtrack that resonates deeply with my spirit, offering moments of relaxation and inspiration amidst my busy schedule.”

Q: How do you plan to make a positive impact at DUT?

A: “I plan to leverage my various roles and initiatives to embody DUT’s values and vision. As President of the University of Life Changers and a member of Student Parliament, I will advocate for policies that enhance student life and align with DUT’s mission. My role as a Residence Student Assistant allows me to directly support and mentor fellow students, fostering a positive living and learning environment within DUT residences. I am committed to promoting diversity and inclusivity through events and initiatives that celebrate our rich campus culture.”

Q: What is your daily motivation?

A: “My biggest motivation comes from remembering where I come from, what I have endured, and my family. Their unwavering support and belief in me drive me to overcome challenges, seize opportunities, and strive for excellence in all my pursuits.”

Q: What are your future goals at DUT?

A: “My future goals at DUT are ambitious and align with the university’s vision of fostering creative, distinctive, and impactful graduates. I aim to complete my current study programme with excellence, leveraging the knowledge and skills gained from my leadership roles and entrepreneurial experiences. I plan to pursue a master’s degree at DUT, deepening my expertise and contributing to cutting-edge research in my field. I intend to rebrand and expand my bakery business, turning it into a successful and innovative enterprise. My aspirations include completing the book I am writing to inspire young women who have faced similar challenges, offering them hope and guidance through my experiences.  Additionally, I aspire to create new programmes that bridge the gap between academic learning and real- world application, enhancing community engagement and providing students with practical, hands- on experiences. By continuously striving to embody DUT’s values and vision, I hope to leave a lasting legacy that inspires future generations of students.”

Q: If you were granted one wish, what would it be?

A: “If granted one wish, it would be to fulfil the purpose God has for me in this world. I believe that living out this purpose will allow me to make the greatest impact, not only within the DUT community but also in the broader world, touching lives and creating positive change wherever I go.”
