On the 6th of September 2024, the Faculty of Accounting and Informatics at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) gathered at the iconic Curries Fountain Sports Grounds for a day filled with sportsmanship, energy, and unity. The event brought together students, and faculty staff members , creating a vibrant atmosphere that celebrated physical fitness.
The day began with a welcome address delivered by the Executive Dean, Professor Oludayo Olugbara, who expressed his enthusiasm for the event. “Sports play a vital role in building team spirit, resilience, and discipline, qualities that are essential not only in the classroom but in life,” Prof Olugbara noted. He highlighted the importance of events like these in fostering relationships among students and staff while promoting a healthy balance between academic pursuits and extracurricular activities.
The Faculty of Accounting and Informatics Sports Day featured a range of activities, including soccer, netball, and Aerobics, with participants showcasing impressive athletic abilities and teamwork. Students from the various departments disciplines within the faculty competed in teams, with a sense of friendly rivalry igniting the competition. Each team represented a department within the faculty, adding a layer of excitement and pride to the day’s events.
The highlight of the day was the fiercely contested soccer match, where the students’ team faced off against a team of faculty staff members. Despite the competitive nature of the game, there were plenty of light-hearted moments, with students cheering on their lecturers and colleagues from the sidelines.
In addition to the thrilling sports competitions, the day also featured the crowning of Miss Faculty of Accounting and Informatics. This light-hearted and fun pageant celebrated not only beauty but also intelligence, confidence, and community involvement. Contestants were judged on their poise, responses during the question and answer session, and their contributions to the faculty. The audience cheered as the winner took the stage, embodying the spirit of the event.
Throughout the day, music, and entertainment created a lively, festival-like atmosphere. The organising committee ensured that the event was inclusive, with activities for everyone, whether they were active participants or spectators.
As the day ended, awards were presented to the top-performing teams, recognising their efforts and dedication. The Faculty of Accounting and Informatics Sports Day was not only a celebration of athletic prowess but also a testament to the strong community spirit that exists within the faculty.
This memorable day was surely a highlight of the academic year in the faculty, reminding everyone involved that a balanced and active lifestyle contributes to both personal and academic success.
