DUT SPORTS IMPACT

As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates that will participate productively in the development of our region, country and the world. Mnqobi Ngobese, DUT Communication’s editorial team member, recently engaged with the DUT Volleyball star Ntokozo Mkhize, to share his student experience through sports and academics and how he lives the DUT Living Values.

Name: Ntokozo Mkhize

Place of birth: KwaMsane, Mtubatuba.

Sport code: Volleyball

Position: Outside/Utility

Qualification: Advanced Diploma in Information and Communications Technology.

Q:  When did you join the DUT Sport Team?

A: “I joined DUT sports in 2020.”

Q: What sparked your interest in this type of sport?

A: “I was introduced to volleyball in Grade 6 by my Life Orientation teacher who was also my coach. I started playing it just for fun, to avoid sitting around doing nothing during break time and sport days. However, I ended up falling in love with the sport, it grew on me. Ever since then I never looked back, I have played volleyball since that time.”

Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what it entails and how it benefits the team?

A: “I play two positions, which is the outside hitter and opposite hitter or the utility. Being a utility or outside player means I can step into different roles as needed, whether it’s setting, passing, or even playing in different hitting positions. This flexibility allows me to adapt to different game situations and support the team wherever I’m needed, making us more dynamic and harder to predict. I am responsible for attacking from both the front and back rows, capitalising on a wide range of sets.”

Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?

A: “There are a lot of sport codes that I am interested in which includes football, rugby, tennis, mixed martial arts, boxing, and many other. But if I were to choose one I am mostly interested in, it would be football because I grew up playing soccer until I became a volleyball player.”

Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?

A: “The Confederation of Universities and Colleges Sports Association (CUCSA) Games 2024, which were held at Tshwane.”

Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sports?

A: “Student athletes learn to balance their academic responsibilities with their sports commitments. This teaches them discipline, time management, and the importance of setting goals. These are skills that will benefit them in both their studies and future careers.”

Q: Who is your sport role model and why?

A: “Wilfredo Leon, who is a Cuban/Polish volleyball player who was born in Cuba. I try to copy his style of play and base my style of play with his, to be able to perform better volleyball. Hence, I also wear jersey number 9 like him. He truly inspires me with many things, he does not only do so in the volleyball court but also outside the court.”

Q: Which ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles do you associate with and why?

A: “Respect, because it guides how I interact with others and approach challenges in my academic and personal life. Respect is essential in creating a supportive and inclusive environment, where everyone feels valued and heard.”

Q: Do you see a future in this particular sport?

A: “To be honest I don’t. Volleyball is one of the most undermined sports in the country, and it is still thriving to get popularity of giants of this country such as football and rugby. So a career in a sport like volleyball is a bit unlikely. But volleyball continues to grow in popularity worldwide, with increased visibility through professional leagues and international competitions like the Olympics. This growth opens up numerous opportunities for players, including scholarships, professional careers, and coaching positions.”

Q: As a DUT sport star, how does your role benefit your community?

A: “By actively participating in sports, I serve as a positive role model for younger athletes and peers, inspiring them to engage in healthy lifestyles, teamwork, and perseverance. This not only promotes physical fitness but also encourages values of discipline and resilience.”

Q: What impact has sport made on your life?

A: “Sport has impacted my life in many ways. Participating in sport has enhanced my teamwork and communication skills. Being part of a team has taught me how to collaborate with others, support my teammates, and develop strategies together, which are valuable skills in both personal and professional contexts.”

Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sport?

A: “Actively use social media to promote upcoming games, celebrate team achievements, and spotlight athletes. Share engaging content such as behind-the-scenes clips, interviews with players, and fun interactive polls to generate excitement and build anticipation for the events.”
