DUT BUSINESS SCHOOL PARTNERS WITH MOBILITY SOLUTIONS AFRICA AND ETHEKWINI TRANSPORT AUTHORITY TO HOST NEW ENERGY VEHICLES INDABA

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) Business School in partnership with Mobility Solutions Africa and the eThekwini Transport Authority, successfully hosted the New Energy Vehicles Indaba on Wednesday, 02 October 2024 and Wednesday 03 October 2024 at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (Durban ICC). This event marked the official launch of Transport Month 2024, under the theme Powering Alternative Mobility.

The Indaba focused on the global landscape of electric vehicles (EVs), unpacking both the opportunities and challenges of achieving a greener, more sustainable automotive industry. The discussions on battery technology advancements and energy storage solutions demonstrated that while South Africa faces technological hurdles, innovation in this space is accelerating at an unprecedented pace. The conversations about charging stations and smart grid integration highlighted the importance of collaboration between government, industry, and the energy sector to build the robust infrastructure necessary for a seamless transition to electric transportation.

One of the enriching discussions was centred on policy and regulatory frameworks. The were presentations on South Africa’s energy policies and how the country can align them with global standards. These presentations were not only enlightening but also served as a reminder of the critical role that policy plays in accelerating progress. Equally inspiring was the focus on local manufacturing and the potential for job creation in the NEV sector.

There were also powerful conversations around sustainability and environmental impact, where participants reflected on the role NEVs play in reducing carbon emissions, but also the importance of ensuring that the energy that powers them comes from renewable sources.

Professor Pfano Mashau, Director of DUT Business School, delivered a thought-provoking presentation on the conference theme and offered closing remarks, emphasising the importance of collaboration between academia, industry, and government to drive innovation in the transport sector.

Dr Bonginkosi Zondi, Senior Lecturer at DUT Business School who facilitated the collaboration and co-founder of an NPO- Mobility Solutions Africa added: “This conference was a critical platform for discussing the future of mobility and the shift towards new energy vehicles. It’s not just about exploring technology, but also about fostering the partnerships that will enable us to implement these innovations effectively across our communities.”

The New Energy Vehicles Indaba underscored the role of DUT Business School in fostering innovation and shaping the future of alternative mobility in the region.
