DUT SPORTS IMPACT

As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates that will participate productively in the development of our region, country and the world. Mnqobi Ngobese, DUT Communication’s editorial team member, recently engaged with the DUT Squash star Akhona Gcabashe,, to share her student experience through sports and academics and how she lives the DUT Living Values.

Q:  When did you join the DUT Sport Team?

A: “I joined the team in April 2023.”

Q: What sparked your interest in this type of sport?

A: “I get anxiety in crowded spaces but I always wanted to participate in any sport just to keep my body active and get therapy for my mind. Squash ticked all the boxes, when I first came to the courts just to watch and familiarise myself with the rules, I instantly saw myself playing. What made me consider joining was how friendly and welcoming the team members were, I didn’t have to sell myself to them, they gladly welcomed me.”

Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what it entails and how it benefits the team?

A: “I am playing position number one. I am consistent in training and always push myself to be the best, that is what got me to be in this position. The team get inspired by seeing me training and giving it my all.”

Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?

A: “None.”

Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?

A: “I have participated in the 2024 Open KZN which was played at the Westville Country Club.”

Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sports?

A: “Sports is good for students’ mental health and physical health. Sports also helps to improve a student’s talent outside their academics.”

Q: Who is your sport role model and why?

A: “Nouran Gohar, I was inspired by her background and where she is now with her squash journey. She built herself up to be who she is now; she always says that you don’t need anyone to become the best but yourself.”

Q: Which ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles do you associate with and why?

A: “Commitment, professionalism and excellence. By aligning myself with these DUT’s ENVISION2030 values, I have committed myself to personal and professional growth. I strive to stay focused on my goals and deliver my best work consistently, pushing myself towards continuous improvement. I believe in acting with integrity, maintaining high ethical standards, and being accountable for my actions. Through professionalism, I aim to demonstrate competence and respect for others. These values help me not only excel but also contribute positively to society, aligning with DUT’s vision for a brighter future.”

Q: Do you see a future in Squash?

A: “I personally play to keep my mind healthy and for fun, so I would not comment on the future.”

Q: As a DUT sport star, how does your role benefit your community?

A: “I believe that the black community, who are not dominant in squash, they would also aspire to become part of the team once they saw that it is possible for us to participate and have fun.”

Q: What impact has sport made on your life?

A: “I have improved a lot in my social life, I have gained many friendships through this sport.”

Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sport?

A: “I believe that to attract spectators to university squash, we need to create a fun, engaging atmosphere with themed match days, and music to keep the supporters entertained. Promote the sport by sharing player profiles, interviews, and behind-the-scenes content on social media, making the players more relatable.”
