Q:  When did you join the DUT Sport Team?

A: “I joined the DUT Sport team in 2020, when I was a first-year student.”

Q: What sparked your interest in this type of sport?

A: “The decision to dive into football was an easy one, given the unmatched love I have for football. Football brings people together in so many ways. It can build lifetime friendships from the field. The thrill of a well-executed play, and the shared sense of accomplishment drives me to be my best. The physical and mental benefits of the game, from handling wins and losses to celebrating growth as a team, make it incredibly rewarding.”

Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what it entails and how it benefits the team?

A: “In football, versatility on the field is a tremendous asset. Each position requires unique skills that contribute to the team’s strength. Defence demands focus, anticipation, and tackling skills to prevent goals and secure the team’s position. Midfield is all about versatility and endurance, acting as the crucial link between defence and offense. Forward is where creativity and goal-scoring instincts shine. Forwards require speed, precision, and confidence to break down the opponent’s defence and score. Playing multiple positions has broadened my tactical understanding, helping me contribute more effectively to the team. It strengthens communication among teammates, making us more adaptable and unpredictable to opponents.”

Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?

A: “Football is my sole focus, it’s more than enough to keep me engaged, offering technical, strategic, and physical dimensions that are endlessly challenging and fulfilling.”

Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?

A: “The biggest tournament I have been part of is the Varsity Football Tournament. Experiences like this highlight the importance of institutions like DUT investing in student sports programmes.”

Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sports?

A: “Participation in sports nurtures holistic growth, improving physical health, mental well-being, and life skills like discipline, teamwork, leadership, and time management. Sports unify students across different faculties and backgrounds, fostering a sense of pride and community. Additionally, sports participation opens doors for scholarships, networking, and potential career paths, both in athletics and other fields. DUT’s support for sports development is essential, helping students build confidence, manage stress, and create a well-rounded experience that prepares them for life beyond university.”

Q: Who is your sport role model and why?

A: “My favourite player is Rodrigo Hernandez, known as Rodri, who exemplifies the qualities of a top-tier midfielder. His versatility, football intelligence, and pinpoint passing accuracy sets him apart. Known for his vision, he effortlessly links defence and attack while maintaining control and high possession. Defensively, he’s skilled at intercepting and breaking up plays, using his tactical awareness to protect his team. His consistent performances, stamina, and calm under pressure make him a reliable leader on the field, embodying many of the qualities I strive to emulate.”

Q: Which ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles do you associate with and why?

A: “I prioritise the following values and principles on and off the field to help foster a positive and inclusive environment. Respect, I believe in treating everyone with dignity, fostering a welcoming community. Honesty, helps me to build trust through truthfulness, strengthening relationships. Commitment, inspires me to show dedication to personal growth and the team’s goals. Transparency, encourages open communication, laying a foundation of trust. Accountability encourages me to take responsibility, which promotes both personal and the team’s growth.”

Q: Do you see a future in football?

A: “I currently don’t envision a future in professional sports as my focus is on supporting my family, I remain open to any opportunities that may arise.”

Q: As a DUT sport star, how does your role benefit your community?

A: “I aim to serve as a positive role model, encouraging others to pursue their ambitions in both sports and academics. My dedication to training, teamwork, and discipline hopefully inspires my peers to lead healthy, active lives. Representing DUT brings pride to our community, motivating younger generations to get involved in sports and strengthening a spirit of unity and perseverance.”

Q: What impact has sport made on your life?

A: “Playing sports has profoundly influenced my life, teaching me discipline, hard work, and resilience. These values have shaped my character and work ethic, extending beyond the field into my daily life. Team sports have emphasised the importance of collaboration and communication skills essential in both personal and professional settings. Soccer has provided a healthy outlet for stress and a reliable way to maintain my physical well-being, while also introducing me to friends who bring an invaluable sense of community and support. Overall, sports has given me a foundation of resilience and life lessons that I carry with me each day.”

Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sport?

A: “Increasing attendance at varsity sports events would elevate the atmosphere and support for DUT teams. Use platforms like Instagram and Twitter to generate excitement by highlighting key matchups, featuring player spotlights, and sharing compelling stories. Posters and campus newsletters can keep students in the loop, creating anticipation for upcoming events. Engage clubs and societies to organize group outings to games, enhancing school spirit and camaraderie. Recruit student-athletes or influential peers to promote games and share their experiences, helping build personal connections to the teams. For those unable to attend in person, live streaming games or posting highlight reels on social media can maintain interest and engagement. Varsity sports does not only elevate the university experience but also bring our community together in shared pride and spirit.”
