Academics from the Faculty of Management Sciences (FMS) at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) recently returned from China, where they attended the third BRICS Research Institute (RI) Conference. Hosted by the BRICS Research Institute at Fudan University from 25 to 27 September, the conference provided a valuable platform for sharing knowledge and strengthening international collaboration. The DUT delegation earned this opportunity by successfully submitting their abstracts for the event.
The university’s FMS representatives included Professor Fulufhelo Netswera (Executive Dean), Dr Nkululeko Zungu, Professor Ravinder Rena, Dr Zanele Mabaso, Dr Sasi Gangiah, Dr Makhosazane Buthelezi, Ms Aifani Tahulela, Ms Sarah Jembere, Ms Raeesah Khan, Ms Thandiwe Khumalo, Ms Lucille August and Ms Lillie Prat. Reflecting on the experience, they expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent DUT on this international stage.
For Department of Hospitality and Tourism lecturers Dr Sasi Gangiah and Ms Raeesah Khan, this conference allowed them to present their first paper as student and supervisor.
“I had the opportunity to present my research on Women-led Agribusiness, Gastronomy, and Food Security in the BRICS countries, which sparked meaningful discussions and insightful feedback from an international audience,” said Khan.
She described the experience as enriching, and insightful and provided a unique platform to engage with researchers and professionals from various disciplines across the BRICS countries. “The conference offered a comprehensive understanding of the shared challenges and opportunities faced by these nations, particularly in areas like sustainable development,” added Khan.
Dr Nkululeko Zungu, Department of Marketing and Retail Senior Lecturer recounted attending the conference as a transformative experience that not only deepened his understanding of global research dynamics but also allowed him to connect with experts in the field.
“Through engaging with a diverse network of scholars, I gained unique insights, particularly on green strategies in key sectors across BRICS countries. I am deeply appreciative of the support from the Department of Marketing and Retail, the DUT Goot Programme Team, and the Faculty of Management Science Dean’s Office, whose encouragement and resources made this invaluable opportunity possible. Their backing empowered me to engage fully in the event, fostering meaningful connections and expanding my academic horizons,” he said.
Dr Zungu presented his paper titled, Analysing Consumer Responses to Green Strategies in Key Sectors Across BRICS Countries. “This study enhances our understanding of consumer responses to green strategies, which are essential for fostering sustainable consumption and production patterns. By examining these responses, we can drive innovation and help BRICS countries achieve their environmental, social, and economic sustainability goals. In addition to presenting, I also served as a session chair, where I guided discussions and facilitated the exchange of ideas among participants, fostering an engaging and collaborative atmosphere,” explained Dr Zungu.
For Dr Zanele Mabaso a lecturer in the Department of Hospitality and Tourism shared that this was her first time presenting at a conference. “The judges were great and I got good feedback from the judges and the other presenters,” she said.
The staff also had an opportunity to visit some of the local tourist attractions. “The third day was a trip to the Great Wall of China and it was fascinating and enjoyable. Since the trip to the Forbidden City and Palace Museum was not part of the agenda, we went on the trip before boarding the flight back to Durban. I was bold in trying some of the Chinese food offered,” recalls Dr Gangiah who also chaired a session at the conference.
For these academics, this trip marked the end of their 2024 conference engagements, as they now set their sights on 2025.
“While I will not be attending any conferences in November and December 2024, I am excitedly preparing for the upcoming event hosted by the Durban University of Technology’s Business School on Climate Change and Economic Management for a Sustainable Future, scheduled for February 26th to 29th, 2025. This conference aligns closely with my interests and research, making it an invaluable opportunity,” said Dr Zungu who expressed a heartfelt gratitude to the Department of Marketing and Retail, the DUT Goot Programme Team, and the Faculty of Management Science Dean’s Office. “Their unwavering support and resources have empowered me to engage fully in this event, fostering meaningful connections that will undoubtedly expand my academic horizons,” said Dr Zungu.
“I am currently engaged with my PhD work and would like to focus on that. At this time, my priority is progressing with my research, so I don’t have plans to attend any other conferences this year. However, I look forward to participating in future events once I’ve made significant progress with my studies,” said Khan
