DUT IEP HOSTED UNIVERSITY OF LIMPOPO INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS FOR A MEET AND GREET SESSION

The International Education and Partnerships (IEP) Directorate at the Durban University of Technology (DUT recently hosted the University of Limpopo International Students (LISO), to meet with DUT International Students (ISO) for the discussion of their 2025 (PAO) Plan of Action regarding International Students relations.

Held at the Ml Sultan IEP Boardroom, the event seek to strengthen relationships and support the international student community through collaborative initiatives. The program was expertly chaired by Ms Chantelle Jembere, an executive member of the International Students Relations Officer for the past two years 2023/2024.

 IEP Officer, Ms Carol Newman welcomed the attendees and emphasised the importance of International Students Organisation (ISO), saying it serves as a home away from home for all international students.

“A very special welcome to the students and staff from the university of Limpopo. This the first event of its kind and we hope that the interactions and the discussions between the two groups will strengthen both organisations. International students have unique problems and therefore, ISO plays a vital role in a life of an international student,” said Newman.

Ms Philile Mbamali, the International Student Relations Officer, who organised and spearheaded the event aimed at formally introducing the executive members of the international student organisation (DUT ISO). She highlighted the various positions and roles that these members hold, and emphasised that these roles are crucial for ensuring a seamless integration of international students at DUT.

University of Limpopo ISO President and International affairs Practitioner, Mr Vusi Makamu delivered the purpose of the day, which was mainly about finding solutions for all the issues that usually affect international students.

Makamu works within the International Affairs office of the University of Limpopo and is responsible for coordinating international partnerships, collaborations, international projects and scholarships of the University of Limpopo. He then led the discussion with students on the following topics:

  • Internal/ External funding for international students
  • Activities that help foster strong international community
  • Integration into society

University of Limpopo students also enjoyed the campus tour that started at the ML Sultan library, Ritson 4IR Labs and concluded at the Steve Biko campus and library.

IEP manager, Ms Divinia Jithoo made the closing remarks, thanking all students for sharing their experiences as international students.

“I like that this was an open space and our students were open to share their experiences. As staff members from DUT, we noted all your concerns. University of Limpopo and DUT International offices works very closely, so we are hoping that both our students can create a network space where they can continue with progressive discussions,” said Jithoo.
