The Durban University of Technology (DUT) has launched the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework, which was built on five core values: transparency, honesty, integrity, respect and accountability. These values are further supported by the principles of fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion and excellence. Waheeda Peters, Publications Officer from the DUT Communications team engaged in a conversation with Wandile Dlamuka, Admissions Clerk at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), to explore the significance of the Living Values Framework and ENVISION2030.

 Q: Kindly tell me about your role at DUT? 

A: “The role of an Admissions Clerk at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) involves various responsibilities aimed at facilitating the admission process for prospective students. They include welcoming and assisting students, data management, document verification, communication and collaboration. This role plays a vital part in ensuring that the admissions process runs smoothly, contributing to the overall efficiency of DUT’s operations.”

 Q: How long have you been a member of the DUT family?   

A: “Since 2021, I am doing my in-service training at DUT.”

Q: Amongst the mentioned ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles, which one do you mostly associate with and why?  

A: “The ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework at DUT seeks to create a culture of integrity and accountability while fostering an inclusive environment for all students and staff.  I associate with honesty which is a fundamental value within the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework at DUT. Honesty fosters trust among students, staff, and stakeholders. Associating with honesty as a value is crucial for fostering trust, maintaining ethical standards, enhancing the institution’s reputation, supporting personal growth, and interlinking with other core values within the DUT community.”

Q: What are your views on the new DUT tagline: Creative. Distinctive. Impactful?

A:  “The new tagline of DUT, Creative, Distinctive, Impactful, encapsulates key attributes that reflect the university’s mission and vision. The emphasis on creativity highlights DUT’s commitment to fostering innovation and critical thinking among students. It suggests an environment where new ideas are encouraged, aligning with the needs of a rapidly changing job market. The term ‘distinctive’ suggests that DUT aims to differentiate itself from other institutions through its unique programmes, culture, and values. This can attract students looking for a specialised educational experience. Impactful reflects DUT’s commitment to making a positive difference in society. It conveys the idea that the university not only educates but also empowers students to contribute meaningfully to their communities. By adopting this tagline, DUT is likely aiming to inspire both current and prospective students while reinforcing its commitment to excellence in higher education.”

Q: How are you planning to keep abreast with the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework?   

A:  As an Admissions Clerk at DUT, staying informed about the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework is essential for ensuring that the admissions process aligns with the university’s mission and values. As an Admissions Clerk I can effectively contribute to promoting and embodying the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework within my role at DUT.”

Q: What is the one thing that most people do not know about you?

A: “I love offering a helping hand to anyone who requires assistance in the field that I am in.”

Q: In your opinion, how will the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework benefit DUT?  

A: “The ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework will significantly benefit DUT in fostering a positive culture, its alignment with Institutional Goals, Promoting Accountability, Strengthening Community Engagement. The framework provides a foundation for ongoing reflection and adaptation within the university. By regularly assessing how well DUT embodies these values, the institution can continually improve its practices and policies. ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework is poised to elevate DUT by creating a values-driven culture that enhances student experiences, promotes accountability, fosters community engagement, and aligns with the university’s strategic objectives.”

Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?   

A:  “In my spare time, I enjoy engaging in a variety of activities that help me relax and recharge. I love reading, learning, creative writing, engaging with others, problem solving. These activities help me stay balanced and engaged while continuously expanding my horizons.”

Q: How do you plan to make a positive impact at DUT?   

A: “I plan to focus on embodying core values, engaging with students and staff, collaborating across units, community involvement, continuous improvement and personal development. By focusing on these areas, I believe I can make a meaningful contribution to DUT’s mission and help create an environment that is not only creative, distinctive, and impactful but also rooted in strong ethical values.”

 Q: What is your daily motivation?  

A: “My daily motivation comes from helping others, continuous learning, making connections, striving for excellence and my commitment to quality. I aim to provide the best possible support, which motivates me to refine my skills and knowledge and being a positive impact, knowing that my assistance can help individuals navigate challenges or achieve their aspirations inspires me.”

Q: What are your future goals at DUT?   

A:  “My future goals at DUT are centred around personal and professional growth, as well as contributing positively to the university community. It revolves around advancing my education, enhancing student support programmes, fostering leadership development, aligning with institutional values, and providing mentorship. These aspirations reflect my commitment to making a meaningful impact within the DUT community while pursuing personal growth.”

Q: If you were granted one wish, what would it be? 

A:  “If I were granted one wish, it would be to secure a permanent position at DUT where I could fully utilise my skills and passion for supporting students and contributing to the university’s mission. My wish for a permanent position at DUT reflects my desire for stability, the opportunity to make lasting contributions, and the chance to empower students while growing professionally within a dynamic educational environment.”
