DUT SPORTS IMPACT

As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates that will participate productively in the development of our region, country and the world. Mnqobi Ngobese, DUT Communications’ editorial team member, recently engaged with the DUT Football team midfielder  Khwezi Dlamini, to share his student experience through sports and academics and how he lives the DUT Living Values.

Position: Midfielder

Qualification: Diploma in Marketing

Q:  When did you join the DUT Sport Team?

A: “I joined in 2021.”

Q: What sparked your interest in this type of sport?

A: “This type of sport interest me because it’s about teamwork. Everyone has a job to do and that unites everyone to work as one.”

Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what it entails and how it benefits the team?

A: “Being versatile and being able to play many positions works better for the me and the team. My position which is number six (anchor) makes sure that the team is well balanced and organised in terms of closing certain areas from the opponent and ensuring that my team does not lose the ball.”

Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?

A “I am keen on Esports and chess, I have a huge background on those sports codes.”

Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?

A: “I have participated in the Varsity Cup.”

Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sports?

A: “It is vital because it is puts the institution on the map and people are recognising that DUT is working hard at showcasing themselves to be known and respected at a particular sport code.”

Q: Who is your sport role model and why?

A: ⁠ My first role model is myself. Not to be modest but I would like to be an inspiration to upcoming footballers. However, I do admire Yaya Toure as I love the way he commands the midfield and how he controls the game.”

Q: Which ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles do you associate with and why?

A: “Accountability, because in this type of sport you need to be sure and accountable for whatever decision you make.”

Q: Do you see a future in football?

A: “ Yes, I always believe that I will get an opportunity to play professionally. When the time comes, I will be ready as I will be also deserving.”

Q: As a DUT sport star, how does your role benefit your community?

A: “Not having an ego towards people and having to treat everyone the same.”

Q: What impact has sport made on your life?

A: “Not being around bad influenced individuals, this has disciplined me and I am aware about valuing another person because we are all the same.”

Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sport?

A: “One way is to engage people more into loving the team.”
