As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates that will participate productively in the development of our region, country and the world. Mnqobi Ngobese, DUT Communications’ editorial team member, recently engaged with the DUT Athletics middle-distance runner Mbali Mashaba, to share her student experience through sports and academics and how she lives the DUT Living Values.

Q: When did you join the DUT Sport Team?
A: “ I joined the DUT Sport Team in 2018 while still in high school through a development programme.”
Q: What sparked your interest in this type of sport?
A: “Growing up, I was always fascinated by track and field events. My passion for running and the thrill of competition drew me to athletics.”
Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what it entails and how it benefits the team?
A: “As a middle-distance runner specialising in 800m and 1500m events, my role entails building endurance, speed, and strategy to outperform opponents. My performances in these events contribute to the overall team score.”
Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?
A “I’m also interested in hockey and soccer. I enjoy the fast-paced nature and teamwork required in these sports.”
Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?
A: “My biggest tournament was the Athletics South Africa Cross Country Championships, which I’ve participated in since 2021, representing my province and university at that level.”
Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sports?
A: “ Developing students in sports is vital for DUT as it fosters a holistic education, promoting physical health, mental well-being, teamwork, and discipline. These skills are crucial for future careers and personal growth.”
Q: Who is your sport role model and why?
A: “My role model is Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone the 400m hurdles record holder. Her dedication, perseverance, and passion for athletics inspire me.”

A: “I associate with excellence, integrity, and respect. Excellence drives me to continuously improve my performance. Integrity is crucial in sports, ensuring fair play and honesty. Respect for teammates, opponents, and officials fosters a positive and inclusive environment.”
Q: Do you see a future in athletics?
A: “ Yes, I envision a future in athletics, possibly competing at the national or international level. I’m committed to my training and development to achieve this goal.”
Q: As a DUT sport star, how does your role benefit your community?
A: “As a DUT sport star, I inspire and motivate young athletes in my community. I participate in outreach programmes, sharing my experiences and providing guidance. I recently got my ASA coaching certificate level 1, I am willing to give it back to the community and help young girls with athletics and coaching them at a young age.”
Q: What impact has sport made on your life?
A: “Sport has been transformative, teaching me discipline, hard work, and resilience. It has provided opportunities for personal growth, networking, and traveling.”
Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sport?
A: “ To attract spectators, I suggest social media promotions, collaborations with local schools, theme days, competitions with prizes, and improving facilities.”
