The Durban University of Technology’s (DUTs) Department of Financial Accounting is proud to celebrate a series of outstanding achievements by its faculty members, setting an inspiring tone for the year ahead.
Dr Haruna Maama, a senior lecturer in the department, and Dr Jean Mvunabandi, a lecturer, have earned the prestigious NRF Y-Rating, a recognition awarded to emerging researchers demonstrating exceptional potential for future leadership in their fields. This recognition underscores their growing influence in advancing academic knowledge and innovation.
Further enhancing the department’s accolades, Nolwando Mgilane, currently a lecturer in the department, has been awarded the highly competitive Black Academics Advancement Programme (BAAP) scholarship, which will support the completion of her PhD in Accounting. This significant milestone not only reflects Nolwando’s commitment to academic excellence but also aligns with DUT’s strategic focus on developing the next generation of black academic leaders.
Adding to these accomplishments, Adele Robinson, a lecturer currently on study leave, has successfully obtained her SAIPA (South African Institute of Professional Accountants) Professional Designation, solidifying her position in the accounting profession. This accomplishment reflects her dedication to maintaining the highest standards in the field.
The department concluded 2024 on a high note, and the momentum continues into 2025 with these significant milestones.
Head of Department, Professor Ferina Marimuthu, remarked, “The conclusion of 2024 was marked by numerous accolades, and 2025 has already begun with tremendous momentum. The remarkable accomplishments of Dr Mvunabandi, Dr Maama, Ms Mgilane, and Mrs Robinson not only underscore the calibre of our lecturers but also embody DUT’s unwavering commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and professional development. We are immensely proud of their contributions and the distinction they bring to the department and the university.” She further said that as the department moves forward, these successes provide inspiration for students and staff alike, reminding everyone of the transformative power of hard work, dedication, and a commitment to excellence.
