As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates that will participate productively in the development of our region, country and the world. S’bonelo Dlamini, DUT Communication’s team member, recently engaged with the DUT volleyball star, Lindokuhle Mtshali to share her student experience through sports and academics and how she lives the DUT Living Values.

Q: When did you join the DUT Sport Team?
A: “I joined the DUT volleyball team in 2022.”
Q: What sparked your interest in this type of sport?
A: “I played volleyball in primary school, then in high school we did not have any sports. However, I always had hope that I will find a team where I would play volleyball. I was excited to know that DUT offered volleyball, hence I joined the team.”
Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what it entails and how it benefits the team?
A: “I play utility, but then I also play several positions like hitter, blocker, setter and I also play the role of being a defensive player which is beneficial for the team if a certain player is not available or injured.”
Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?
A: “Athletics, at a younger age I mostly participated in athletics related sports which I believe that I did very well before I was introduced to volleyball. I gained great interest in athletics during this period.”
Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?
A: “I have participated in the 2024 University Sports South Africa (USSA) games at the Tshwane University of Technology.”
Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sports?
A: “By doing so, DUT will be demonstrating its commitment to providing a well-rounded environment for their students in all aspects of life.”
Q: Who is your sport role model and why?
A: “Melissa Vargas, a professional volleyball player for Turkey women’s national team. Vargas inspires me more since we share the same birthday and the fact that she is an amazing player in court and she also plays utility which is the same position I play.”
Q: Which ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles do you associate with and why?
A: “Commitment and respect as we are always taught by our coach that there is no victory if you don’t have commitment. For respect, it is basically about giving respect to everyone around you in the team as well as the institution.”
Q: Do you see a future in volleyball?
A: “Yes, there are professional players that are making a good living through volleyball, therefore I see myself my self having a future career in volleyball.”
Q: As a DUT sport star, how does your role benefit your community?
A: “I offer mentorship by sharing my experiences, skills and knowledge to inspire the developing athletes.”
Q: What impact has sport made on your life?
A: “It has motivated me to believe that anything is possible but only if you work hard on it, you will make it, you will see the results.”
Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sport?
A: “Social media campaigns, creating engaging content, hashtags, and to create a hype on upcoming events.”
