S’bonelo Dlamini, DUT Communication’s team member, recently engaged with the DUT football star, Sphakamiso Vilakazi to share his student experience through sports and academics and how he lives the DUT Living Values.

Q: When did you join the DUT Sport Team?
A: “In June 2024.”
Q: What sparked your interest in this type of sport?
A: “At an early age, I developed a great interest and love for football which was inspired by Andile Jali who is my role model. Jali’s dribbling tricks, passes and creativity for creating goal scoring opportunities made me fall in love with football.”
Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what it entails and how it benefits the team?
A: “I play in the midfielder position. Most times it happens that the team would have a disagreement when things don’t go the way we plan as the team. This is due to the fact that the belief is that midfielders are the ones that have the most difficult position on the team.”
Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?
A: “I also love cricket and I consider it as my second sport.”
Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?
A: I participated in the Khabba cup at Umlazi.”
Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sports?
A: “Sports is important for students because it helps to destress and it is a very great way for students to make new friends.”

A: “Andile Jali because I love his playing style.”

Q: Do you see a future in soccer?
A: “Yes, I do.”
Q: As a DUT sport star, how does your role benefit your community?
A:” I believe one has to work hard in both their academics and sports roles as this is a way to give back and be a pillar to my community.”
Q: What impact has sport made on your life?
A: “It has helped me to forget about life issues and it helps me concentrate on my life goals.”
Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sport?
A: “Use social media platforms and host sports events more regularly.”
