As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates that will participate productively in the development of our region, country and the world. S’bonelo Dlamini, DUT Communications team member, recently engaged with the DUT Males Netball star, Koketso Moyo to share his student experience through sports and academics and how he lives the DUT Living Values.

Q: When did you join the DUT sport team?
A: “ In 2023, I started off with playing volleyball and was scouted in 2024 for the males netball team.”
Q: What sparked your interest in this type of sport?
A: “The opportunity they offered me was far more greater than what I had anticipated, the coaches were very welcoming and helped me by integrating from volleyball to netball.”
Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what it entails and how it benefits the team?
A: “I play Goalkeeper (GK), which is a more defensive role. I get to see the game from all angles and ranges which helps me give out the right information to my teammates. Being a GK means one has to be the anchor of the defensive third.”
Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?
A: “Volleyball and soccer, I’ve played soccer my whole life and had to take a step back after my injury. Volleyball is a fun sport with a lot of brotherhood which helps in the betterment of the team.”
Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?
A: “It was the 2024 Males Netball University Sport South Africa (USSA) at University of Johannesburg which was the first ever launch for males netball USSA tournament.”
Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sport?
A: “It helps students to have a competitive edge in the sports fields which helps reduce any school or family stresses they may have. Sport helps students to keep vibrant and productive while keeping up with their school grades.”
Q: Who is your role model and why?
A: “My aunt, she represents a woman in power, she is always urging me to do the best to my capabilities and is always willing to lend a helping hand.”
Q: Which ENVISION2030 living values and principles do you associate with and why?
A: “Integrity, because for me trust in a team is very valuable. Respect for me is also important due to the diversity of the sport being able to respect the other person’s sexuality. Compassion is as much of importance as we are all trying to achieve a certain goal and a bit of empathy and support helps reach that milestone. Excellence, for me is not about perfection but the level of effort and dedication you put into a particular task.”
Q: Do you see a future in Males Netball?
A: “At the moment no, I see it as a hobby.”
Q: As a DUT star, how does your role benefit your community?
A: “Being a member of the DUT community helps those who want to do what I do have a better view of knowing that you do not have to be of certain culture to do it, if you put your mind to it anything is possible.”
Q: What impact has sport made on your life?
A: “Sport has helped me stay away from unnecessary and unwanted attention to a life of extreme measures like smoking, drinking or even being a thief. Sport gives me purpose.”
Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sports?
A: “Create a consistent social media platform that will keep students on the loop with the weekly sport news.”
