As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates that will participate productively in the development of our region, country and the world. S’bonelo Dlamini, DUT Communication’s team member, recently engaged with the DUT netball female captain, Thandolwethu Mhlongo to share his student experience through sports and academics and how he lives the DUT Living Values.

Q: When did you join the DUT sport team?
A: “I joined in 2022.”
Q: What sparked your interest in this type of sport?
A: “I was fascinated with it from a young age, and was also inspired by my father as he’s a man who is deeply rooted in sports.”
Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what is entails and how it benefits the team?
A: “I play goal attack, and my position allows me to assist the goal shooter in scoring goals and my versatility allows me to score too, for example when the goal scorer is heavily defended, I can go score.”
Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?
A: “Football as it’s a sport I grew up playing.”
Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?
A: “It was the University Sport South Africa (USSA), which was hosted in the University of Johannesburg and it was my first time being selected to represent Durban University of Technology.”
Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sport?
A: “Students have the potential to thrive in these sports and be able to create a future through them as different futures have different paths and some of them could be sports stars.”
Q: Who is your role model and why?
A: “My mother, she’s been a rock in my life and has persevered throughout a lot in life. She showed me that you can overcome obstacles if your trust yourself.”
Q: Which ENVISION2030 living values and principles do you associate with and why?
A: “Commitment, because I show commitment to this sport through regular training, pushing past limitations, and consistently showing up for my team. I’m guided by this dedication and fully committed to it.”
Q: Do you see a future in netball?
A: “Yes, and I’m dedicated to achieving it and maybe get a chance to play in the Telkom Netball League (TNL) to showcase my talent.”
Q: As a DUT star, how does your role benefit your community?
A: “I’ve used my influence to the best of my abilities and have opted to teach children netball and share all the skills that DUT has taught me.”
Q: What impact has sport made on your life?
A: “It allowed me to branch off, discover new places, and meet new people. It exposed me to a lot of new things of which I am grateful for.”
Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sports?
A: “Better advertising of sport events maybe Game Day promotion, where we will offer discounts, giveaways, or special deals on game days to attract fans.”
