Nokuhle Gumede, a 22-year-old from the rural areas of Mthwalume, kwaQwabe location, has overcome numerous challenges to achieve academic success. Growing up in a big family with financial constraints, Gumede focused on her education as a means to better herself and her loved ones.

Her determination has paid off as she is set to walk the stage at the Durban University of Technology’s (DUT) Autumn 2025 graduation ceremony, recognised as one of the top achievers in the Faculty of Accounting and Informatics. She will be receiving her Diploma in Taxation with a Dean’s Merit award. The ceremony is scheduled for Monday, May 26, 2025, at the Durban Olive Convention Centre.

After her father’s passing in 2005, her mother sought job opportunities in the townships, and Gumede was determined to make the most of her education. Her time at DUT was a transformative experience, where she met amazing individuals who contributed to her academic achievements and personal growth.

Upon receiving the forthcoming news of graduating with the Dean’s Merit award, she beamed with joy, as she felt the hard work was finally paying off.

“I am overwhelmed with joy and gratitude as I reflect on my achievements. Tears of joy fill my eyes every time I think about it. This milestone gives me hope and proof that hard work and dedication lead to great things,” she excitedly shared.

Reflecting on her journey, she advises others to work smart, network with professionals in the field and to seek mentors. Her experience at DUT has taught her the importance of professionalism, reliability, adaptability, and self-development.

Her story is one of resilience and dedication. She is currently pursuing an Advanced Diploma in Taxation and plans to further her studies up to NQF 8 or more. Her career aspirations include becoming a Tax Advisor or Financial Statements Analyst.

As Gumede looks to the future, she is filled with hope and gratitude. Her family’s pride and happiness mean the world to her, and she is determined to make them proud. Her story serves as a testament to the power of hard work and dedication in overcoming adversity and achieving success.
