STUDENT ENTREPRENEUR LEAVES DUT WITH A DEGREE AND A BOOMING BUSINESS

A 25-year-old, Ndumiso Vilakazi from Mpolweni in KwaZulu-Natal graduated from the Durban University of Technology (DUT) 2025 Autumn Graduation with a Bachelor of Education in Senior Phase and FET at the Indumiso campus in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday, 13 May 2025. His journey through DUT has not only shaped him as an educator but has also played a crucial role in the establishment of his business and growth of his entrepreneurial venture.

While studying at DUT, Vilakazi founded his own business, Ikamvelihle Captures, a photography company offering quality, unique, and reliable services. Established in 2021 during his second year of study, the business has grown steadily and earned a loyal client base in his hometown of Mpolweni. Despite the positive reception, Vilakazi acknowledges the challenges that come with entrepreneurship particularly in managing finances, marketing, and staying ahead of the competition.

Vilakazi’s commitment to both education and business reflects the DUT’s commitment to producing adaptive graduates that are entrepreneurial, creative and innovative. The university encouraged him to think critically and creatively, skills that have benefitted him in both the classroom and the business world. He credits DUT for fostering an environment that pushes students to develop real-world solutions.

His academic journey was not without challenges. Coming from a disadvantaged background, Vilakazi was raised by his mother, a farm worker, who had to support him and his siblings with limited resources. Despite the financial struggles and emotional pressure, his family provided the support he needed to keep going. Their belief in his passion gave him the strength to persevere.

Passionate about teaching and changing lives, Vilakazi chose his field of study out of a desire to shape the future of the youth. He currently works at Busana High School, where he continues to inspire and educate learners. Looking ahead, he hopes to further his studies by pursuing an Honours degree in Education or a related field provided he can secure financial assistance.

To first-year students, Vilakazi offered wise advice: “Stay focused, work hard, and be open to learning and growth. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, and make use of the resources and opportunities DUT offers.”

In closing he extended his gratitude to DUT for playing a huge role in shaping him as an educator and a business-minded person who wants to make a real difference. Through both his teaching and business, he aims to build a future filled with purpose, passion, and possibility.
