Durban University of Technology (DUT) officially launched the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework, comprising five core values: transparency, honesty, integrity, respect and accountability. These values are underpinned by the principles of fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion and excellence. DUT Communications and Marketing Officer from the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Silindile Buthelezi, recently engaged in a conversation with Professor Mack Moyo, Associate Professor and Head of Department of Horticulture, to delve into the living values framework and ENVISION2030.

Q: Kindly tell me about your role at DUT?

A: I am an Associate Professor and Head of Department of Horticulture.

Q: How long have you been a member of the DUT family?

A: “I have been an academic staff member in the Department of Horticulture for five years.”

Q: Amongst the mentioned ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles, which one do you mostly associate with and why?

A: “The ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles are thoughtfully crafted and present a holistic vision for the institution. These values and principles are interconnected and mutually reinforcing, making it difficult to pick one as the most significant. What I appreciate most is their inherent relatedness and interdependence, which collectively shape a forward-thinking institutional culture.”

Q: What are your views on the DUT tagline: Creative. Distinctive. Impactful?

A: “The new tagline succinctly captures the institution’s commitment to nurturing innovation, delivering a distinctive educational experience, and making a meaningful impact on society. The tagline reflects a progressive philosophy that aligns with the institution’s broader vision.”

Q: How are you planning to keep abreast with the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework?

A: “I plan to stay engaged with the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework by integrating its principles into my daily professional activities. I will collaborate with colleagues to share best practices and ensure continuous growth.”

Q: What is the one thing that most people do not know about you?

A: “I pay attention to detail.”

Q: In your opinion, how will the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework benefit DUT?

A: “The ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework lays the foundation for a people-centred and engaged institution. The framework fosters a shared vision among all stakeholders, which encourages a culture of inclusivity, innovation, and excellence. Through innovative curricula and impactful research, DUT will develop adaptable graduates equipped to drive societal transformation and address global challenges.”

Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?

A: “I use my spare time to do DIY projects.”

Q: How do you plan to make a positive impact at DUT?

A: “I will mentor students and early-career researchers to develop their critical thinking and problem-solving skills, thereby nurturing a culture of academic excellence. Through innovative research in plant sciences, I aim to address real-world challenges and enhance the university’s scholarly reputation. I will continue to actively participate in departmental, faculty and institutional activities and initiatives.”

Q: What is your daily motivation?

A: “I am motivated by the promise that each new day brings an opportunity to make a difference.”

Q: What are your future goals at DUT?

A: “I would like to contribute to the DUT academic project by developing my research program in plant physiology and biotechnology. I am dedicated to advancing the field of plant sciences whilst contributing to global sustainability efforts.”

Q: If you were granted one wish, what would it be?

A: “I would wish for every individual, regardless of background, to have access to quality education that empowers them to reach their full potential.”
