ALUTA MAPALANA’S PATH TO ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND A FUTURE IN LECTURING

Aluta Mapalana, a 21-year-old from Pietermaritzburg, proudly graduated Cum Laude with a Diploma in Sustainable Horticulture and Landscaping from the Durban University of Technology (DUT). The graduation ceremony took place at the Olive Convention Centre on Monday, 19 May 2024, marking a significant milestone in her academic journey.

Her DUT journey began in 2021 when she enrolled in the diploma programme, driven by a long-standing love for the environment, plants, and sustainable living. During her third year, she had the opportunity to complete her in-service training with the Msunduzi Municipality, where she gained valuable hands-on experience and was able to apply the theory she had studied in a real-world context.

Graduating Cum Laude was a goal Mapalana had set from the beginning. “It means that all the hard work I put in has paid off, when I registered for this qualification, I told myself that I wanted to pass all my modules outstandingly and I am honoured to have achieved that,” said Mapalane.

Mapalana’s final year of study was especially demanding, as she also pursued an Advanced Diploma in Sustainable Horticulture in 2024. That year, she was involved in research work a challenging one but rewarding experience that helped her grow both academically and personally.

She credits DUT’s living values for shaping her journey, especially the principles of commitment and excellence. “I was dedicated to achieving academic success by respecting myself and my qualification, To be a productive student, you have to live those values,” said Mapalane.

Despite her achievements, the road was not without its challenges. Financial constraints were her greatest hurdle, as she was not funded during her studies. Fortunately, her grandmother stepped in to support her where she could, easing some of the pressure. Academic stress, especially while juggling research, tests, assignments, and exams, also weighed heavily on her. But through it all, she stayed focused and determined.

Her family was filled with pride upon hearing of her graduation. They expressed deep appreciation for her ability to complete her qualification in record time, despite the obstacles she faced. Their support, she said, kept her motivated. Mapalana’s choice to study sustainable horticulture was no accident. In high school, she had a strong interest in agricultural and life sciences, which blossomed into a love for nature conservation, farming, and recreational green spaces. These interests became the foundation of her academic and career goals.

Looking ahead, she plans to register for a Postgraduate Diploma in Sustainable Horticulture, with the possibility of studying further. Her career goals include gaining as much practical experience as possible and continuing her journey in research. She also aspires to become a lecturer, where she can share her knowledge and inspire future students.

To those considering a similar path, her advice is clear: “First, fall in love with the course you’re doing. Stay focused no matter what challenges come your way, and do not hesitate to ask for help from fellow students or lecturers.”
