 JOYFUL MOMENT FOR BEHNAZEER SHAIK AS SHE OBTAINS DEAN’S MERIT AWARD FOR HER BACHELOR OF CHILD AND YOUTH CARE

A moment of pride for Behnazeer Shaik as she becomes the first female graduate in her family. Shaik graduated Cum Laude with Dean’s Merit Award for her Degree of Bachelor of Child and Youth Care at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) Graduation Ceremony on Tuesday 20 May 2025 at Olive Convention Centre (OCC) in Durban.

Shaik expressed that graduating with Dean’s Merit Award is a meaningful recognition of academic dedication and consistency.

“I see it as a result of staying focused and pushing through even when things got tough and I am proud of that,’’ she added.

The 24-year-old has praised her family for their unwavering support and sacrifices. She said that making her family proud means the world to her. Shaik feels that she owes her family so much for her success. She revealed that upon receiving the news her family was overwhelmed with emotions and tears of joy.

Surprisingly, she wanted to study radiography, child and youth care was never her first choice. Nevertheless, she fell in love with it and excelled with Deans Merit Award.

She described her life at DUT as vibrant one, challenging and a growth-filled journey. She also commended the institution for not only focusing on academics, but also on developing students personally and professionally.

The Durban born believes that as a Child and Youth Care professional, Compassion which is one of the DUT ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles, is at the heart of everything in their field.

“It means being present, understanding, and genuinely caring for the well-being of others especially young people who may be facing difficult circumstances,’’ she explained.

Managing time was one of the significant challenges in her studies. Including procrastination which often led to heightened stress and last-minute pressure.

Currently she is employed as a Guidance Counsellor at a school in Chatsworth, where she supports learners in their personal and academic development. In the future he plans to pursue a Master’s degree followed by a PhD as she aims for transitioning into the field of lecturing.

Sharing a message of encouragement to first year students who want to embark on the same journey, Shaik said this field requires patience, empathy and a commitment to make a difference in the lives of young people. Therefore, students must give their best because delicate lives are left in their hands which needs to be transformed positively.
