Attending to a rewarding work space, accompanied by her sterling academic studies has propelled the Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) Ronelle Lyson to always achieve excellence in all that she does.
The Alumni Relations Coordinator under the Advancement and Alumni Relations unit at DUT, graduated with Cum Laude and obtained the esteemed Dean’s Merit Award for academic excellence for her Postgraduate Diploma in Management Sciences, specialising in Public Relations and Communication Management.
She took to the stage at the DUT 2025 Autumn Graduation ceremony, which took place at the Olive Convention Centre on Thursday, 22 May 2025..
Graduating with Cum Laude and earning the Dean’s Merit awards was such an unexpected but incredibly rewarding experience for Lyson.
“It really made me reflect on how much hard work, dedication, and commitment go into achieving something meaningful. It wasn’t just about the distinctions achieved; it was about pushing myself, staying focused, and not giving up even when things got tough. I’m grateful for the support and encouragement I’ve received from my lecturers, mentors, and even my colleagues at the DUT,” shared an elated Lyson.
She expressed that every person had played a huge role in helping her get to this point.
“So, for me, these awards aren’t just a personal achievement-they’re a reminder of the great people and opportunities around me that made it possible. At the end of the day, it just motivates me to keep pushing myself. There’s always more to learn and new goals to set, and I’m excited to see where this journey takes me next,” she explicated.
Her journey at the DUT has been both transformative and deeply rewarding. Lyson started her career at the university in August 2020 as the Alumni Relations Coordinator, a role that allowed her to engage with a dynamic community and contribute to fostering long-lasting relationships between the university and its alumni.
“Working in such an academic environment inspired me to further my own education and continue growing professionally,” she relayed.
In 2023, Lyson decided to pursue her academic aspirations and enrolled in the Advanced Diploma in Management Sciences, specialising in Public Relations and Communication Management. She was thrilled to complete her qualification with cum laude honours and Dean’s Merit recognition, which further fuelled her passion for academic excellence.
The academic ‘bug’ bit Lyson at that point, and she continued her studies by registering for the Postgraduate Diploma in Management Sciences, also specialising in Public Relations and Communication Management. “
I was proud to achieve Cum Laude with Dean’s Merit once again. This ongoing academic journey has been incredibly fulfilling and has deepened my understanding of the field,” she shared euphorically.
Most recently, Lyson has further taken another step in her academic career by registering for the Master’s in Management Sciences, specialising in Public Relations and Communication Management. “I am excited about the possibilities this new chapter will bring and look forward to continuing my journey of learning and contributing to the academic and professional communities I am part of,” she emphasised.
Working at the DUT, says Lyson, has been instrumental in shaping both her career and academic path, and she professes how grateful she is for the opportunities and encouragement she has received along the way.
As both an alumnus and a staff member in the DUT Advancement and Alumni Relations unit, she feels deeply connected to the university’s vision for the future, especially in the context of ENVISION2030.
Her academic journey and my role at the DUT are both aligned with the core values and goals of ENVISION2030, particularly when it comes to driving innovation, fostering lifelong learning, and enhancing the university’s global impact.
“Through my studies, particularly in Public Relations and Communication Management, I’m gaining a deeper understanding of how effective communication and strategic management can help shape organisations and communities,” she said.
Lyson explained that her studies aligns perfectly with the DUT’s goal of nurturing graduates who are not just academically skilled but also equipped to drive positive change in their professions and communities by being adaptive.
By continuing her studies, Lyson aims to contribute to this vision by fostering stronger connections between the DUT and its alumni, creating meaningful networks, and promoting ongoing collaboration that supports both academic and professional growth.
“Moreover, ENVISION2030 emphasises the importance of sustainability, inclusivity, and transformation-values that are embedded in the work I do within the Advancement and Alumni Relations unit. I see my studies as a way to enhance my ability to contribute to the DUT’s mission of developing socially responsible and globally engaged individuals who are ready to meet the challenges of tomorrow,” she echoed.
In essence, Lyson’s academic journey and her work at DUT are closely intertwined with ENVISION2030. “
Both give me the tools to actively participate in shaping a future where the DUT is not just a leader in education, but also a driving force for societal development and innovation,” she proffered.
For Lyson, the DUT values and principles that resonate most with her are excellence, integrity, and social responsibility. Excellence is something she strives for in all aspects of her life, especially in her academic and professional journey.
“The DUT’s commitment to excellence aligns perfectly with my personal ambition to grow and contribute at the highest level. Integrity is another core value that I deeply identify with. DUT’s focus on integrity is something I take to heart, as it encourages me to always act ethically and responsibly. Lastly, compassion is a principle that drives much of my work. These values-excellence, integrity, and compassion-are the principles that guide my actions and my approach to both my studies and professional life. They are the foundation of everything I do at the DUT and beyond,” highlighted Lyson.
Besides herself, her family was incredibly proud and excited when they heard about her achievements. They’ve always been my biggest supporters, and they knew how much effort she had put into balancing work, studies, and my other commitments.
Currently, Lyson is pursuing her master’s in Management Sciences, specialising in Public Relations and Communication Management
Her aim is to continue growing in the Public Relations and Communication Management, building on the knowledge and experience she has gained, particularly through her journey at DUT. “I’m eager to grow within the DUT itself, taking on leadership roles where I can influence strategy and foster meaningful connections, both internally and with external stakeholders,” shared Lyson. Additionally, she wants to contribute to the development of future professionals, whether through mentorship or creating opportunities for collaboration.
“Ultimately, I see myself in a strategic role, continuing my growth at the DUT while using my skills to inspire change and make a positive impact,” she explained.
Her advice to future students is to stay curious, seek real-world experiences, and build relationships early on.
“Manage your time well, stay focused, and most importantly, be passionate about your work. Every challenge is an opportunity to grow, so stay motivated and embrace the journey,” she said.
