BASTIKA PREM EMBARKS ON A BRIGHT FUTURE IN THE WORLD OF TECHNOLOGY

At just 21-years-old, Bastika Prem has already made impressive strides in the world of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Originally from Durban, KwaZulu-Natal and now living in Johannesburg, Gauteng, she recently graduated with her Advanced Diploma in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) from the Durban University of Technology (DUT) during the 2025 Autumn Graduation Ceremony, held on Saturday, 24 May 2025 at the Olive Convention Centre in Durban.

Prem began her academic journey at DUT in 2021, enrolling in the Diploma in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Applications Development. After completing the three-year qualification in 2023, she made the decision to continue her studies and pursue the Advanced Diploma in Information and Communication Technology in 2024. Her time at DUT has been filled with growth, discovery, and a deepening passion for the tech industry.

Reflecting on her academic path, Prem shared that the experience has been both rewarding and challenging. One of the biggest tests came in the form of time management, particularly during her studies for her Advanced Diploma in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), when she had to juggle academic projects and her participation in the 2024 BRICS Skills Development and Technology Innovation Competition. These demands required her to refine her prioritisation skills and maintain focus under pressure. “It was a demanding period, but it taught me how to work efficiently without compromising on quality,” she explained.

Throughout her journey, Prem has drawn inspiration from DUT’s core values which are transparency, honesty, respect, integrity, and accountability. She also resonates strongly with the university’s principles of fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion, and excellence. “These values and principles have guided me through group projects, leadership roles, and challenging moments, and helped shape the kind of professional I aspire to become,” she added.

Her academic path was a personal choice, fuelled by a genuine passion for Information Technology and software development. “I have always had a deep interest in this field, that passion is what has kept me motivated and driven to succeed,” said Prem.

Her family has been a constant source of support and encouragement throughout her studies. “They were overjoyed when they heard the news,” their belief in me has been a powerful motivator,” she elaborated.

Currently, Prem is part of an IT trainee programme at FNB, working within the Core Banking space. This role allows her to apply what she has learned, broaden her horizons, and continue growing both personally and professionally. “I get to solve problems, learn something new every day, and do what I love,” she said.

Looking ahead, Prem plans to continue studying and adapting as new technologies emerge. She believes in lifelong learning and wants to remain at the forefront of the ever-evolving tech landscape. While she is still exploring the specific path she would like to take within the industry, her ultimate goal is to keep growing, learning, and making a meaningful impact.

For students beginning their own journeys in tech, Prem offers advice she lives by: “Follow the 3 P’s Patience, Perseverance, and Passion. Patience will keep you grounded, perseverance will keep you moving, and passion will keep you inspired.”
