Radiating pride and accomplishment, Samkelisiwe Dlamini, a 22-year-old from KwaNgcolosi, Hillcrest, has emerged as one of Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) most inspiring graduates. Earning her Advanced Diploma in Internal Audit with Cum Laude and receiving the prestigious Dean’s Merit Award, Dlamini’s story is one of determination, personal growth, and triumph over adversity.
Her academic journey at DUT from her Diploma to her Advanced Diploma in Internal Auditing was both intellectually enriching and personally transformative. She credits her academic development to engaging lectures, thought-provoking discussions with peers, and the mentorship of dedicated educators. She particularly acknowledges the unwavering support of Mr Reddy, her lecturer, and Sihle Mduzulwana, a DUT tutor, who played key roles in helping her stay focused and motivated.
“Their guidance made a significant difference in my academic journey. I am truly grateful for the support I received along the way,” she reflected.
Outside of academics, Dlamini found balance in the hustle of student life through sports and spirituality. Playing Res League netball provided a healthy outlet to manage her stress, while her active involvement in the DUT NATESA (Nazareth Tertiary Student Association) offered a strong foundation of spiritual support, life skills, and a sense of belonging during difficult times.
Throughout her final academic year, she faced extreme financial difficulties, having no funding to support her studies. Her mother, despite limited resources, ensured her that she could register and will see to her needs at the residence. The stress affected her health and academic performance, leading to weight loss and emotional strain.
The greatest personal loss came when she lost her roommate during her final exams, an emotionally devastating experience.
“It was a crushing time. I had to attend her funeral the day before one of my most difficult exams. I studied in the car on the way to and from the funeral. Despite everything, I pushed through,” she said.
Graduating with Cum Laude amidst these trials made the achievement all the more meaningful. Sharing the news with her family, especially her mother was a moment filled with emotion and pride.
“My mother was the first person I called. Her joy and pride were written all over her face. This one is for her I would not have made it without her support,” she explained.
She explained that Internal Auditing was not her initial career choice. Her dream was to study BCom in Accounting, but circumstances led her to internal auditing, a decision that eventually became a passion.
“Even though it was not my first choice, I grew to love the field. It is still within the accounting space, and over time, I became fascinated by its depth and relevance,” she explained.
Currently, Dlamini is gaining practical experience as an Internal Audit intern at SPAR, one of the country’s leading retail companies. But she is far from finished as she plans to enrol for a Postgraduate Diploma in Internal Audit in 2026, with her long-term goals of becoming a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) and eventually earning a PhD in the accounting field.
To students just beginning their academic journeys, her advice is to stay rooted in experience and wisdom.
“Keep an open mind and stay curious. Do not be afraid to ask for help your lecturers and tutors are there for a reason. Build strong relationships with your peers, take care of your mental health, and know that setbacks are not the end. Learn from them, grow, and keep pushing forward.”
