At just 22 years old, Nivashan Nandlal from Umhlanga, Durban, received his Honours in Urban Engineering from the Durban University of Technology (DUT). This is his second academic achievement after completing a Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Civil Engineering. His journey is a true reflection of dedication, perseverance, and a passion for meaningful change in urban infrastructure.
From an early age, Nivashan was fascinated by civil engineering and urban development. His passion lies in solving infrastructure challenges, particularly those affecting water security and service delivery. This field allows him to combine his problem-solving skills, technological innovation, and urban planning expertise to create sustainable and efficient solutions.
“It was not just about earning a degree but about learning, innovating, and contributing to real-world solutions,” he shared. He did research that focused on digitalising the water reticulation system in the eThekwini Municipality. This research reflects on his commitment to improving urban infrastructure and enhancing service delivery through modern technology.
Balancing work and academics was not easy, but determination and discipline helped him achieve Cum Laude for his Honours degree. “Graduated Cum Laude is an incredible achievement for me. It validates the hard work, dedication, and sacrifices I have made over the years. It also serves as motivation to continue striving for excellence in my future endeavours,” he said.
Among DUT’s core values, excellence resonates most with him. His work in urban engineering aligns with the principle of leveraging technology to enhance service delivery. To him, engineering is not just about constructing buildings It is about transforming cities and communities through smart, sustainable solutions.
Nandlal expressed deep gratitude to his family for their unwavering support and encouragement on his academics. “My family have been my pillar of strength throughout my academic journey, and this accomplishment is as much theirs as it is mine,” said Nandlal. He further explained that when he shared his achievement with his family they were very happy and proud of him for his success.
As Nandlal looks to the future, he plans to pursue a Master’s degree in Urban Engineering, and explore smart city solutions and sustainable urban development. His ultimate goal is to contribute to urban infrastructure projects that improve water management and drive digital transformation.
For students hoping to follow in his footsteps, Nivashan offers this advice: “Stay curious, be persistent, and see challenges as stepping stones to success.” He emphasised the importance of time management, networking, and staying updated with industry trends to excel in the field of engineering.
Currently, he is completing his in-service training at an engineering firm while also managing his family business, The Carport Company. As he prepares for the next phase of his career, he looks forward to applying his expertise in urban engineering to projects that create a lasting impact.
With a heart full of gratitude, he acknowledges the role DUT has played in shaping his journey. The knowledge, experiences, and opportunities gained from the university have set the foundation for a bright future.
