The Durban University of Technology (DUT) Centre for Social Entrepreneurship and Rapid Incubator (CSERI) officially kicked off its 2025/2026 incubation programme with an Induction Workshop held on Tuesday, 27 May 2025, at its offices on the ML Sultan Campus.
A total of 29 entrepreneurs14 men and 15 women have been selected to join the year-long programme designed to support the growth and sustainability of Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs). The programme offers access to business development training, coaching, mentorship, markets, potential funders. It also focuses on the personal development of the entrepreneur, recognising that sustainable business growth begins with empowered individuals.
This year’s cohort is as diverse as it is dynamic, spanning sectors such as cleaning services, healthcare, construction, manufacturing (including perfumes and clothing), food and beverage, technology, information and consulting services, personal care and beauty, agriculture (from crop production to poultry farming), energy, transportation, photography, and integrated business services.
Welcoming the new entrepreneurs, CSERI Director Mr Solomon Nyamurima encouraged participants to view the programme not as a competition, but as a collaborative opportunity.
“You come from different backgrounds, but what will unite and strengthen you is mutual respect and professionalism,” said Nyamurima. “Let the DUT Living Values; Transparency, Honesty, Integrity, Respect, and Accountability guide you, not only through this programme but in how you run your businesses.”
He urged entrepreneurs to stay connected to their communities, grow responsibly, and remain committed to producing quality work. “Don’t be afraid to collaborate. Build relationships and always strive for excellence.”
Adding a personal and inspirational touch to the event was CSERI alumnus Mr Cebolenkosi Gcabashe, founder of G Khula Trading. His business specialises in property enhancement cleaning services including roof cleaning, landscaping, and grass cutting. A member of the 2024/2025 cohort, Gcabashe reflected on his journey, highlighting the importance of active participation and self-drive.
“CSERI provided the platform, but I had to put in the work. I’ve won funding competitions, learned how to manage my finances and market my business, and most importantly, I’ve built a community of fellow entrepreneurs. Make the most of this opportunity,” he said.
All the entrepreneurs expressed enthusiasm about the start of their journey. Ndumiso Ncube from Manjula Group shared: “The induction answered many of the questions I had. I’m looking forward to learning more throughout the incubation programme.”
As CSERI continues its work in nurturing innovative and resilient entrepreneurs, the 2025/2026 cohort stands as another significant step in DUT’s mission to foster sustainable impact through entrepreneurship.
