A mathematics lecturer at the Durban University of Technology, Dr Mthobisi Ntuli is excited to be counted amongst the athletes who will be running the Comrades Marathon for the first time this coming Sunday, 08 June 2025.
Dr Ntuli who is currently teaching mathematics to first year students revealed that his Comrades Marathon preparations have been quiet structured. His role involves not only delivering lectures but also guiding students in building a strong foundational understanding of mathematical concepts.
“I followed a routine of running three times a week, complemented by two days of strength training and two days of rest. Wednesdays and weekends were dedicated to long runs, including race days when necessary,” shared Dr Ntuli.
He said at this last stage, he is reducing his mileage to a maximum of one hour per session while maintaining the same level of intensity.
Sharing his passion for long distance running, Dr Ntuli said for him running is a complete rollercoaster of emotions. He said there is the pre-race excitement, the rush at the starting line, and the blend of joy and pain throughout the journey. Dr Ntuli believes it takes stubbornness and mental grit to push through fatigue and moments of doubt. However, he shared that runners nothing compares to that triumphant feeling of crossing the finish line and earning their medals.
“For Comrades, I placed a strong focus on strength training, particularly to address knee pains, which tend to be a challenge, especially during a down run. I had to prepare for the nearly 30 km of downhill from Hillcrest. I also used ultra-marathon races as part of my training to build endurance for the ultimate human race,” reiterated Dr Ntuli.
To prepare his mind and body for the race, Dr Ntuli said he has been following a well-balanced, healthy diet where each meal includes plenty of vegetables, lean protein, and carbohydrate-rich foods, along with fiber-rich meals. His mornings usually consist of homemade smoothies, fresh fruits, and plenty of water to stay hydrated.
He is aiming to complete the race within 11 hours. He advised his fellow athletes to stick to their plans and not rush or push beyond their paces. He believes self-motivation and mental resilience are key. Dr Ntuli said more than just a physical challenge, Comrades Marathon demands determination and strategy.
To all the incredible supporters who will be lining the route, we deeply appreciate you, your energy will keep us going, even in the toughest moments! To the DUT Athletic Club, we’ve got this!” concluded Dr Ntuli.
