Durban University of Technology (DUT) officially launched the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework, comprising five core values: transparency, honesty, integrity, respect and accountability. These values are underpinned by the principles of fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion and excellence. DUT Communications team member, Phiwayinkosi Sibiya recently engaged in a conversation with Nkosingiphile Mtetwa, an intern in the Finance Debtors unit to delve into the living values framework and ENVISION2030.
Q: Kindly tell me about your role at DUT?
A: “I am currently an intern in the Finance Debtors unit at DUT. My main responsibilities include assisting with payment plans, generating invoices, and running reports. I also analyse data using Excel functions such as VLOOKUP and Pivot Tables to ensure accurate financial reporting. Additionally, I am involved in training sessions aimed at enhancing my skills and understanding of financial processes.”
Q: How long have you been a member of the DUT family?
A: “I have been a proud member of the DUT family since 2022, but at the Finance Debtors unit it has been six months, and it has been an incredibly enriching experience. Every day presents new opportunities to learn and grow professionally.”
Q: Amongst the mentioned ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles, which one do you mostly associate with and why?
A: “The DUT living value I strongly associate with is integrity because I believe that honesty and transparency are fundamental to building trust and fostering a positive work environment. Upholding integrity ensures that I perform my duties ethically and responsibly.”
Q: What are your views on the DUT tagline: Creative, Distinctive, Impactful?
A: “The tagline perfectly captures DUT’s innovative spirit. It inspires us to be creative in our approach, stand out in our fields, and make a meaningful impact in our communities and beyond.”
Q: How are you planning to keep abreast with the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework?
A: “I plan to actively participate in training sessions, to seek feedback from my mentors, especially Nokwazi Makhanya, and to continuously apply these values in my daily tasks. Staying engaged and open to learning will help me to embody the framework fully.”
Q: What is the one thing that most people do not know about you?
A: “Most people don’t know that I have a keen interest in data analysis and problem-solving, which is why I enjoy working with excel and analysing financial data, it challenges me to think critically and find solutions.”
Q: In your opinion, how will the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework benefit DUT?
A: “Believing in the framework will foster a culture of integrity, professionalism, and accountability, which will enhance DUT’s reputation and effectiveness. It encourages us all to uphold high standards and work collaboratively towards a shared vision.”
Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?
A: “In my spare time, I enjoy reading, exploring new technology tools, and engaging in activities that help me relax and recharge, so I can perform at my best at work.”
Q: How do you plan to make a positive impact at DUT?
A: “I plan to contribute by continuously learning, applying my skills diligently, and embracing the values of honesty and professionalism. I also aim to support my colleagues and improve processes wherever possible.”
Q: What is your daily motivation?
A: “My daily motivation is the desire to learn and grow. I am inspired by the possibility of making a meaningful contribution to DUT’s success and building a strong foundation for my future career.”
Q: What are your future goals at DUT?
A: “My goal is to gain comprehensive financial knowledge, to develop my skills further, and eventually take on more responsibilities within the organisation. I aspire to contribute meaningfully to DUT’s mission and vision. I also wish to continue my studies and eventually obtain my master’s degree in accounting, to deepen my expertise and to enhance my ability to contribute at a higher level.”
Q: If you were granted one wish, what would it be?
A: “I would wish for the opportunity to continue learning and growing within DUT, eventually becoming a valuable asset to the organisation and making a lasting impact.”
