Durban University of Technology (DUT) officially launched the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework, comprising five core values: transparency, honesty, integrity, respect and accountability. These values are underpinned by the principles of fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion and excellence. DUT Communications team member, Phiwayinkosi Sibiya recently engaged in a conversation with Sanele Mzizi, an intern in the Finance Unit to delve into the living values framework and ENVISION2030.
Q: Kindly tell me about your role at DUT?
A: “I am a DUT Finance intern, assisting in capturing and verifying financial transactions using internal system and reconciliation of financial reports, ledgers and statements.”
Q: How long have you been a member of the DUT family?
A: “I joined the DUT family in June 2024, so I’ve been part of the team for a year now.”
Q: Amongst the mentioned ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles, which one do you mostly associate with and why?
A: “I strongly associate myself with integrity. As an intern, I believe that building trust through integrity not only helps me to grow professionally but also supports the DUT vision of accountability and responsible leadership.”
Q: What are your views on the DUT tagline: Creative, Distinctive, Impactful?
A: “The tagline inspires me to think more beyond my role and be part of something greater that truly makes a difference, I think it’s also about finding smart, efficient ways to solve challenges.”
Q: How are you planning to keep abreast with the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework?
A: “To stay aligned with the ENVISION2030 living values in my daily work, especially integrity as I believe brings ubuntu, and excellence; and also learning from others in DUT community to make sure my actions consistently reflect the DUT values.”
Q: What is the one thing that most people do not know about you?
A: “One thing most people do not know about me is that I enjoy solving problems quietly behind the scenes. I’m very passionate about personal growth and learning new skills outside of my role.”
Q: In your opinion, how will the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework benefit DUT?
A: “I believe that ENVISION2030 improves students and staff experience, ensuring that everyone is treated equally and with dignity which improves well-being and productivity.”
Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?
A: “Learning new skills to use in time of need and to explore online courses or tutorials.”
Q: How do you plan to make a positive impact at DUT?
A: “To contribute positively through dedication, collaboration and commitment to ENVISION2030 living values. By joining an organisation that will contribute to my growth, knowledge and in returning good to the university.”
Q: What is your daily motivation?
A: “I believe in putting in the effort and hard work necessary to achieve your goal, don’t wish for it, work for it.”
Q: What are your future goals at DUT?
A: “My future goal at DUT is to obtain my master’s degree. I am excited to further my education and to expand my knowledge in my field. This will not only enhance my skills but also open new opportunities for me. I’m looking forward to the challenges and experiences that come with pursuing my master’s degree. I’m confident that DUT will provide me with the support and resources I need to achieve my goal.”
Q: If you were granted one wish, what would it be?
A: “It would be for everyone to have equal access to education and truthful information, regardless of their location or background. I believe that education is a fundamental right that can empower individuals and transform communities. With access to accurate and reliable information, people can make informed decisions, break cycles of poverty, and reach their full potential. This wish would enable people from all walks of life to acquire knowledge, develop critical thinking, and to contribute to creating a more just and equitable society.”
