DUT VIDEO TECHNOLOGY STUDENT WINS FILM AWARD

DUT VIDEO TECHNOLOGY STUDENT WINS FILM AWARD

“MBALI” a film by Wilson Mzelemu, a fourth-year Video Technology student at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), was named the Best Student Film at the 2025 Simon Mabhunu Sabela Awards. This glittering ceremony was held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (Durban ICC) on Saturday, 19 July 2025.

Mzelemu was nominated for the prestigious award alongside two of his fellow DUT students, Manqoba Cebekhulu and Mariska Naidoo.

The annual awards ceremony was held under the theme “Africa’s Giants of Storytelling: From Piers to Pages,” a celebration of African excellence in film and television. This year’s edition honoured talent across 25 competitive categories.

Following the announcement, Mzelemu expressed his gratitude and reflected on the journey behind MBALI. “Deep down, I believed in the story we told and the hard work we invested into MBALI. I knew we had something special but when you’re surrounded by such incredible student talent, it still comes as a humbling surprise. So yes, I had faith but it still hit me with shock and gratitude when we won,” he said.

Mzelemu described the win as a result of consistency, risk and intention rather than luck. He believed the creative decisions made throughout the project were bold but honest. “We made choices that were risky, raw, and personal and it’s beautiful to see that resonate with people,” shared Mzelemu.

He also encouraged aspiring filmmakers to focus on truth and vulnerability in their storytelling, instead of chasing recognition. “Don’t chase awards, I know that sounds weird coming from me but chase the truth in your story. Be vulnerable. Be honest. Surround yourself with a passionate crew that believes in your vision. And most importantly, finish what you start. Even if it’s not perfect, complete it. That’s how you grow and get noticed,” said Mzelemu.

He shared that a new project is in development with Horizon Studios, centred on themes of legacy and healing. “We are currently developing the next project under Horizon Studios, which dives into themes of legacy and healing. No fixed release date yet, but it’s coming soon. So, keep an eye out,” he said.

Mzelemu also acknowledged the people who supported him, including a close friend who encouraged him to enter these awards and his parents who stood by him throughout. He paid special tribute to the cast and crew of MBALI, particularly lead actress Thandi Molepo.

“Honestly, the MBALI cast and crew, especially Thandi Molepo who led the film with such power, reminded me why this story mattered. Everyone believed in me before I fully believed in myself,” he shared.

Dr Lance Lutge, Acting Head of the Video Technology Department in the Faculty of Arts and Design at DUT, praised the win as a proud moment for both Mzelemu and the faculty.

“We are incredibly proud of one of our own, Mr Mzelemu for winning Best Student Film at the Simon Mabhunu Sabela Film and Television Awards. This achievement is not only a testament to his individual talent and hard work, but also a reflection of the dedication and passion within the department. The news has been received with immense excitement and pride by staff and students alike. It reaffirms that the calibre of work coming out of the Video Technology Department is competitive at a provincial and national level.” shared Dr Lutge.

Dr Lutge went on to describe Mzelemu’s filmmaking style and commitment. “Having worked closely with Mr Mzelemu, I can say without hesitation that he has the drive, discipline, and vision of a true filmmaker. His work ethic is consistent and focused, while approaching each project with a mix of humility and hunger to learn. Stylistically, he has a strong sense of narrative and a deep sensitivity to character and environment. He’s thoughtful in his visual choices and always willing to collaborate, listen, and improve.” he shared.

In the years ahead, Mzelemu sees himself running a creative house focused on telling powerful African youth stories and building pathways for emerging voices. “The dream is big, but the steps are intentional.” Mzelemu said.
