DUT SPORTS IMPACT

As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates that will participate productively in the development of our region, country and the world. S’bonelo Dlamini, DUT Communication’s team member, recently engaged with the DUT Ballroom Dance Star, Fezeka Sikhakhane to share her student experience through sports and academics and how she lives the DUT Living Values.

Q: When did you join the DUT sport team?

A: “I started doing sport at DUT in 2020, this decision has helped me stay active, make new friends and balance my academic life. Being part of the sport team at DUT has been a rewarding experience.”

Q:  What sparked your interest in this type of sport?

A: “My interest in ballroom was spiked by its elegance, watching videos and couples glancing across the dance floor, moving in perfect sync and mastering their steps.”

Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what it entails and how it benefits the team?

A: “Ballroom dance entails partners working together to master choreographed routines, executing precise movements and showcasing harmony and synchronisation. This team effort benefits the team by fostering trust, communication and mutual support. Ballroom dance also promotes teamwork by requiring partners to co-ordinate their movements, timing, and style.”

Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?

A: “I’m interested in rugby because of its fast paced action, physicality and emphasis on teamwork.”

Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?

A: “The biggest tournament I have participated was the University Sport South Africa (USSA) competition. This tournament brought together all ballroom dancers from the universities across South Africa. This experience allowed me to test my skills against the best athletes.”

Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sport?

A: “Developing a student in sport is vital for DUT because it’s promote holistic growth, fostering physical wellness, teamwork and leadership skills. It also enhances the university spirit to create a sense of community and to provide opportunities for students to represent DUT on national and international platforms.”

Q: Who is your role model and why?

A: “My role model in ballroom dance sport is Tumi Tlhabi because of her exceptional techniques, passion and dedication to the sport.”

Q: Which ENVISION2030 living values and principles do you associate with and why?

A: “Excellence and integrity. I strive for excellence in my pursuit, aiming to deliver high quality performance and to continuously improve. I uphold integrity by being honest and transparent in my interactions.”

Q: Do you see a future in ballroom dance?

A: “Yes, I see a future in dance sport, envisioning continued growth and development as a dancer. I would love to compete at higher level, master more complex routines and represent DUT and South Africa in international competitions.”

Q: As a DUT star, how does your role benefit your community?

A: “My role benefits my community by inspiring young dancers and to promote the value of dance sport. I serve as a role model encouraging community members to stay active.”

Q: What impact has sport made on your life?

A: “Dance sport has had a profound impact on my life, teaching me discipline, boosting my confidence and providing a creative outlet.”

Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sports?

A: “The ideas could include hosting themed match days, offering interactive fan zones, providing live music or entertainment before events and promoting social media coverage.”
